2014 Apple Blossom Development

at WSU TFREC in Wenatchee:

On Monday, April 21, 2014, the blossom

development stage was:   FULL BLOOM

at 1019 blossom degree days (43F base temp.)
since Jan. 1.

Though this is 6 days ahead of the long term normal full bloom date, it is the same date as 2013 and within a day or two of the full bloom dates of 2010 and 2012.  Full bloom occurred on May 6th in 2011, a very late season.

The 2014 dates for flower buds stages were:

Green Tip:  March 24
Half inch green:  March 28

Tight Cluster: April 4

Loose Cluster: April 9

First Pink:  April 10

Full Pink: April 14

First Bloom:  April 16

Full Bloom: April 21

Petal Fall: April 28

Note:  Most apples, especially early blooming apples such as Gala at lower elevations around Wenatchee develop bloom stages at least a few days before this site’s prediction, which is based on the full bloom time of Red Delicious.

“Full Bloom” is set at 60% open King blossoms on the north side of a Red Delicious tree at the long term traditional site about 50 meters to the west of the WSU TFREC.
