Dana E and kidsHazel Dell — Third-graders at Hazel Dell Elementary School made lettuce seed strips in class on April 1, and two days later planted them in the school’s garden.

The students were assisted by Washington State University Vancouver master gardeners. The class made the strips by dotting some newspaper with flour paste and attaching seeds.

“It’s a great way for little hands to handle little seeds,” Barbara Nordstrom, one of the master gardeners, said in an email.

Once the lettuce is harvested, it will be donated to the school’s weekend backpack program for hungry kids; when school is out it will go to a local homeless shelter.
