Dairy Community Scholarship for 4-H and FFA

This year the Dairy Farmers of Washington are offering two scholarships through the Dairy Community Scholarship program. These scholarships are available for 4-H or FFA members involved with dairy cattle in Washington State. These scholarships recognize two candidates from each grade level (junior and senior) who exhibit excellence in academics, leadership, and passion for the dairy community and community service.  Applications are due July 15.  You can find more information here:  https://wadairy.org/4h-ffa-wa-dairy-community-scholarship/

4-H Demonstrations – 2018

All clubs are invited to participate!
Tuesday, April 24, 3:30 p.m.
Stratton Elementary School in Newport

If you have youth that wish to be on the schedule to make presentations please contact Lola Rickey at 509 292-2223, rickeylola@gmail.com.

Practicing and offering 4-H Public Presentations give youth an ideal opportunity to stretch and grow in the “mastery” of their activities. Find more information about how to do a 4-H public presentation by downloading WSU Publication #EM4787E, “Getting to the Point”.

Thanks to the Bare Mountain Bandits 4-H Club for organizing this event!

Volunteer to Host an International Exchange Delegate

Washington 4-H International Exchange is hosting youth delegates from Costa Rica, Japan, and South Korea this summer. We’re looking for families that would like to gain a global perspective by sharing their home with an international delegate. The host family commitment is July 22 – August 17 for Japan and South Korea delegates, June 26 – July 21 for Costa Rica delegates. No special activities are required or expected during the homestay, just a real Washington family experience for all.

These are great kids from families much like yours. They’re excited to make friends, learn about Washington, practice their English, and be a part of your family for 4 weeks this summer.

The delegate lists and some answers to host family questions can be found here, http://extension.wsu.edu/4h/youth/global-4-h/international-exchanges/

Now is the time to submit your family summer hosting application. Host families should have a designated host sibling who would be the same gender and within 3-4 years of the international delegate’s age. Screening for new host families includes 4-H background checks for all family members over 18 who will be in the home during the exchange period, and a home visit.

Call Dianna Ullery (360-867-2153) or email dianna.ullery@wsu.edu if you have questions, and apply to be a Host Family at www.states4hexchange.org

Ties to the Land Succession Planning workshop

Saturday March 31, 9 AM – 4 PM at Carnation Farms in Carnation.

Many family forest and farm owners want to preserve their family lands but face challenges engaging family members in ownership and operations.  This facilitated workshop explores succession planning – the human side of estate planning – which focuses on ways to maintain family ties to the land from generation to generation.

The workshop will feature the award-winning Ties to the Land curriculum. Cost is $35 per couple before March 22, and $45 per couple thereafter.  The fee includes one set of materials and lunch. Lunch and materials can be purchased for additional family members.

Register at [forestry.wsu.edu/nps/events/ttl/]forestry.wsu.edu/nps/events/ttl/ or contact Kelsey Ketcheson at (206) 263-1128 kelsey.ketcheson@wsu.edu

Forestry Current Use Taxation Seminar

Do you have property in King county?  Reduce the property taxes on your forested/wooded property.  This seminar will introduce the current use taxation programs that are available to property owners with forested/wooded property in King County. There are two key programs to choose from depending on your objectives for your property: Designated Forestland and the Public Benefit Rating System (PBRS). These programs can provide qualified property owners with significant tax savings. The seminar will cover detailed descriptions, qualifications, and the application process for these programs.  You can find more information here:  http://forestry.wsu.edu/nps/events/currentuse/

Premium Points

Last year, the POC Leader Council initiated a Premium Points program.  We kept track of 4-H youth and adults who attended events like Super Saturday and attended or zoomed into Leader Council meetings.  Up to two points were awarded for each adult and two points for each youth attending each event.  At our February meeting, the Leader Council voted to pay clubs $5.00 per point earned.

We will be handing out Premium checks at our March 14 meeting – so put it on your calendar today.  Bring out your youth and adults to receive your club’s checks and start earning points for this year!  If you cannot attend, Zoom into the meeting instead!

Clubs unable to attend the next meeting need to contact Vickie Blanchet to make arrangements to obtain their check.  If your club does not have a checking account, please turn in (to Vickie Blanchet) club receipts equal to your premium and you will be reimbursed.
