Then become a WSU Beach Watcher!
All WSU Beach Watchers receive university-caliber training. This 80 hour WSU Beach Watcher Training Program includes expert presentations, field trips and hands-on practice in:
- coastal processes
- marine organism identification
- water quality conditions
- public education tips
- climate change
- planned restoration efforts
- and so much more!
Beach Watchers receive 80 hours of training throughout the spring. While the classroom is based out of Everett, we travel throughout the county to visit the amazing places at our feet.
The 2017 training dates are Fridays, March 17th – May 19th AND Saturdays, April 1st and 29th from 9 AM – 3:30 PM. Trainees should plan to attend the full Beach Watcher training program. The 2017 training descriptive cover letter and flyer, along with the 2016 training agenda will give you an idea of what to expect.
In return, Beach Watchers continue learning while volunteering at least 80 hours over two years as citizen scientists, educators, restorationists and project planners. The Class of 2017 can start volunteering right after the training is over in the late spring! A few examples of WSU Beach Watchers projects are: doing beach interpretation at public parks; monitoring beach elevation, substrate and vegetation coverage; collecting water quality samples; planning and hosting educational events; educating Snohomish County residents, dog owners and more!
You don’t need to be an expert to participate – just be interested in Puget Sound issues and be willing and able to participate in projects after the training is over.
Class size is limited, so there is a required application due on February 26, along with a free background check.
