Chelan-Douglas 4-H SnowSchool (Workshop #1)

February 5, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

4-H SnowSchool introduces middle and high school students from Chelan and Douglas Counties
to winter based activities to include snow shoeing and exploring local recreation destinations.
Program experiences include hosting Natural Resource Professionals during online workshops
and extended learning opportunities. Program objectives aim to offer students perspective on
potential careers and activities to build their competence in the outdoors. The purpose of this
program is to introduce students to the mountains in their backyard, and educate the students
about the snowpack, STEM opportunities, and watershed conservation efforts. This partnership
uses Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards to explore the scientific methods
through the lens of snow science. Students work with facilitators to collect and analyze data with
necessary materials from their 4-H SnowSchool Kits. Participants summarize their finding
through reflection papers, fulfilling Agent of Discovery Missions, and participating in the Winter
Wildlands Alliance Snowpack prediction contest.

Objectives of the program include:

  • Students, visitors and families will:
    • Engage with their environment during the winter.
    • Develop the use of the scientific method through the lens of snow science and water
      equivalency.
    • Recognize avalanches hazards, behavior, and causes.
    • Participate in the Winter Wildland Alliance’s Wenatchee Mountain snowpack prediction
      contest.
