SUMMARY:Groom Squad at the Washington State 4-H Fair
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DATE: Saturday\, September 12 with test at 2 p.m. – check in at the Paulhamus Meeting Room …. contest at 4:30 p.m. in the Paulhamus Horse Arena. \n\n\n\nPurpose\n\n\n\nThe purpose of this contest is to provide 4-H youth with an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to work together in a safe and humane manner to groom and prepare a horse for show. \n\n\n\nState Contest Eligibility and Registration\n\n\n\nThe Washington State 4-H Groom Squad Contest is held during State 4-H Fair. Registration through your local County or tribal program and Fair Entry.  \n\n\n\nEach county is invited to send one team. The team will be composed of three (3) senior 4-H members selected in any manner deemed appropriate at the county level. \n\n\n\nEach team member is required to register for the contest in Fair Entry per the instructions provided by State 4-H Fair. \n\n\n\nMembers of the county groom squad team may participate in this event at State Fair without being entered in other classes of the 4-H Horse Division at the State 4-H Fair. \n\n\n\nAll 3 members must be enrolled in 4-H Online within the current 4-H program year and be senior age 4-H members as per State 4-H age policy. \n\n\n\nCounty Contest Recommendations\n\n\n\nProcedures are outlined on the final page of this document. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProcedure\n\n\n\nThis contest includes three phases: written quiz\, horse grooming\, and showmanship exhibition. One member shall take the written quiz\, another shall exhibit the horse in showmanship\, all three members shall groom the horse. \n\n\n\nQuiz\n\n\n\nOne team member will complete a written quiz prior to the beginning of the grooming/arena event. The WA State 4-H Equine Contest Approved Source List is available on our WA State 4-H Horse page under Contest Resources. All questions in the WA State 4-H Groom Squad Contest will be sourced from these resources. \n\n\n\nGrooming\n\n\n\nThirty minutes will be allowed for grooming the horse. One team member will hold the horse. The holder may rotate. The holder may work on grooming the horse as long as it is done in a safe manner. The horse must always be under control. \n\n\n\nShowmanship\n\n\n\nFollowing grooming\, team members will have 15 minutes to practice showing the horse. All members may assist but only one will be selected by the team to participate in the final showing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHorse Selection\n\n\n\nEach county team must furnish a horse. The horse must be sound and safe to handle. \n\n\n\nFor the State contest\, the team must use a horse on exhibit at State 4-H Fair (i.e.\, a team cannot bring a horse in for the contest). If the county has horses already at State Fair\, the county groom squad team will choose one of their county’s horses. If the county does not have horses at State fair\, the State Groom Squad Contest Coordinator and State Fair Horse Superintendent will assist in selecting the horse. \n\n\n\nSelection of all horses will be under the supervision of the State 4-H Fair Equine Superintendent\, 4-H Fair Manager\, and/or State Groom Squad Contest Coordinator\, all of which have authority to change horses if a horse is deemed unsound or unsafe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrooming Equipment\n\n\n\nEach team must furnish all their own grooming equipment. \n\n\n\nMinimum SuggestedAdditional AllowedNot Allowed4′ x 4′ tarp or pad to lay equipment onShow halter and leadElectric equipment2 curry combs (rubber\, plastic or metal)Bot blockCommercial products (soap\, hoof black\, mane and tail whitener\, show sheen\, cornstarch\, chalk\, oil\, etc.)1 soft bristle brushShedding BladeRazor blades or any items containing any type of razor blades1 hard bristle brushScissorsMane and tail comb or brushBot KnifeGrooming rags – dry\, with no grooming aids addedSpray BottlesHoof pickBucket – all water used must be contained in a bucketShavings\n\n\n\nGrooming Equipment Chart \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContest Attire\n\n\n\n4-H members are responsible for representing the WA State 4-H Program. As with all 4-H activities\, attire is governed by suitability for the activity and considerations outlined in WA State 4-H Policies and Procedures and the 4-H Member Code of Conduct. Attire should reflect the mission and values of the 4-H program as a premier youth development program. \n\n\n\nBoots are required. All team members must wear boots. \n\n\n\nTeam uniforms are optional. Teams may (and often do) choose to dress similarly (e.g.\, matching pants\, 4-H t-shirts\, polos\, long-sleeved shirts). \n\n\n\nCounty-identifying attire is allowed and may be worn. \n\n\n\nShowmanship attire is required for the Showmanship class as outlined in the WA 4-H Equine Program Rule Book. If needed\, the team member showing the horse in Showmanship may change into show attire during the 15 minutes allotted for Showmanship practice. \n\n\n\nIt will be the judgment of the State Groom Squad Contest Coordinator and the respective state staff including the State Fair Manager or county 4-H staff to determine if attire is inappropriate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBasis of Judging\n\n\n\nScore are tabulated by combining scores achieved in the following six areas: \n\n\n\nGrooming – 10 points possible\n\n\n\nPoints awarded on the method demonstrated to clean and “slick off’ the horse for show. \n\n\n\nTeam should use tools correctly\, and in the correct order. \n\n\n\nRefer to the Grooming Section of the 4-H Horse Project Guide for additional grooming procedure information. \n\n\n\nCurry Combs\n\n\n\nUse in a circular motion to lift dirt\, flicking motion to remove dirt. Never use on ears\, or on legs below knees or hocks\, or on mane and tail. \n\n\n\nHard brushes and Soft brushes\n\n\n\nUse short\, brisk\, flipping motion to remove dirt. \n\n\n\nMane and tail comb or brush\n\n\n\nStart brushing at bottom of hair and work up toward roots; never start at the top. \n\n\n\nHoof pick\n\n\n\nAlways work heel to toe \n\n\n\nCloth\n\n\n\nFor use on head and finishing touches on coat. \n\n\n\nHands\n\n\n\nUse for adding bloom to coat and removing excess hair \n\n\n\nTeamwork – 15 points possible\n\n\n\nBased on organization\, equal participation\, and completion of all grooming steps/tasks within the allotted time. \n\n\n\nTeams should be well organized. Each team member should have their own task. \n\n\n\nEach team member should have space to work. Never cluster around one area. \n\n\n\nTeam members should be pleasant to each other. \n\n\n\nTeams should not talk with friends\, parents\, audience\, or other teams. Excessive talking within a team may be marked down. \n\n\n\nEquipment – 5 points possible\n\n\n\nEach team should have at least the minimum equipment suggested. No limit is placed on the amount of equipment allowed but extra equipment will not necessarily receive more points. \n\n\n\nAll equipment should be clean and in good usable condition. \n\n\n\nTeams may not borrow from or loan equipment to other teams. \n\n\n\nPrior to the contest\, a judge will check all equipment. \n\n\n\nAll equipment points (-5) will be deducted if illegal equipment is found. \n\n\n\nSafety – 35 points possible\n\n\n\nPoints awarded for properly following the rules of safety for working around a horse. \n\n\n\nAll members of the team must wear boots. \n\n\n\nNever stand or work in the “Danger Zone” which is directly in front and directly behind the horse (see Safety Zones diagram). \n\n\n\nAll team members will work on the same side of the horse. \n\n\n\nNever kneel or sit near the horse. When grooming legs\, squat down so you can move quickly away if the horse moves. Never have all team members squatting at the same time. \n\n\n\nWhen crossing behind a horse\, either cross out of range of hind legs or pass close with a hand on the horse. \n\n\n\nNever cross under the lead rope between handler and horse. \n\n\n\nWork quietly. Any abuse or harsh treatment of the horse will result in disqualification. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWritten Quiz – 20 points possible\n\n\n\n20 minutes are allowed for the selected team member to complete the written quiz. \n\n\n\nQuestions will be multiple choice and true/false. \n\n\n\nThe WA State 4-H Equine Contest Approved Source List is available on our WA State 4-H Horse page under Contest Resources. All questions in the WA State 4-H Groom Squad Contest will be sourced from these resources. \n\n\n\nShowmanship – 15 points possible\n\n\n\nOne team member will exhibit the horse in a 4-H showmanship class following the rules of the Washington 4-H Equine Program Rulebook\, which includes personal appearance and ability demonstrated in presenting the horse. Showmanship attire is expected. \n\n\n\nAwards\n\n\n\nAwards are based on the Danish system of judging which is evaluated against a standard and scoring system as outlined in these groom squad contest rules. \n\n\n\nThe recommended breakdown is as follows: \n\n\n\n\nBlue Danish: 86 to 100 points\n\n\n\nRed Danish: 70 to 85 points\n\n\n\nWhite Danish: 69 points and below\n\n\n\n\nRefer to Description of the Group System (or Danish) System of Judging for additional information. \n\n\n\nAwards at State Fair are determined by State Fair. For example\, Champion and Reserve Champion may be given to blue ribbon teams at the discretion of the judge and/or the parameters of the State Fair contest. \n\n\n\nIt is suggested that each team member receives ribbons earned by the team. \n\n\n\nCounty Contests\n\n\n\nCounty contests are encouraged to observe state contest rules and procedures with the following considerations: \n\n\n\nMembers may be Juniors\, Intermediates\, or Seniors. \n\n\n\nMembers must be currently enrolled in 4-H Online. \n\n\n\nIt is recommended that the team be composed of three 4-H members of the same age division (junior\, intermediate\, or senior). However\, while not encouraged\, mixed age teams at the county level are allowed. A mixed team will compete as the oldest age division represented on the team. For example\, if it is a mixed team of junior\, intermediate\, and senior\, the team will compete as a senior team. \n\n\n\nNote: Only teams of three senior members can qualify for the State Contest. \n\n\n\nSafety and age appropriateness are paramount. For example\, a junior team may not be tall enough to fully groom a 16-hand horse\, yet if that is the horse available\, a horse can only be groomed up to the height on its body that the members can safely reach. \n\n\n\nMembers may participate in this event without being entered in other classes of the 4-H Horse Division at their county level horse activities\, per county discretion. \n\n\n\nHorseless horse members are encouraged to participate. \n\n\n\nHorses are selected by the process the county deems appropriate but must be sound and safe to handle. \n\n\n\nThe facility at which the event is hosted should be large enough to accommodate multiple teams with adequate space between them for safety\, including ample space for grooming equipment and enough space to facilitate the showmanship portion of the contest. Horses being groomed should not be tied. One of the team members should be holding the horse. \n\n\n\nThe judge for a county groom squad contest should be knowledgeable about the Washington State 4-H Equine Program and familiar with Washington State 4-H equine publications. The judge(s) may either be an official judge\, a volunteer\, 4-H alumni\, or 4-H supporter. The judge(s) should not be a parent or family member of any of the team members they are judging. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4h.equine@wsu.edu

SUMMARY:WA State 4-H Horse Judging Contest
DESCRIPTION:Class 18 – Equine Judging Contest \n\n\n\nSuperintendent – Pat PehlingPremium Points: Blue 30\, Red 23\, White 17 \n\n\n\n\nLot 1 – Juniors\n\n\n\nLot 2 – Intermediates\n\n\n\nLot 3 – Seniors\n\n\n\n\nEvent date: Saturday\, September 12….registration begins at 8 am in the Pierce County Arena. \n\n\n\n\nPlease refer to all general judging contest rules and National Judging Contest rules found in the General Activities and Contests section of the premium book.\n\n\n\nEach county may enter up to ten juniors\, ten intermediates and ten seniors in the equine judging contest. All participants must have received a blue or red ribbon placing at the county qualifying event.\n\n\n\nAll equine judging contestants are to register in Fair Entry. One adult should accompany each county team (one for the intermediate team and one for the senior team). Each junior should have an adult with them to assist in registering.\n\n\n\nParticipants will judge six classes: two halter classes (any breed or type)\, one pleasure class (western\, hunter\, or other than hunter type)\, one equitation class (stock seat\, saddle seat\, or hunt seat)\, plus two other classes. Juniors\, Intermediates and seniors will judge the same classes.\n\n\n\nRules covering classes are in WA State Equine Rule Book\, USA Equestrian Rules\, and AQHA Rules.\n\n\n\nHorses will not be handled by the contestants\, but time will be provided in halter classes for close inspection and observe the horses at a walk and a trot.\n\n\n\nFifteen minutes will be allowed for contestants to judge non-reasons classes\, 17 minutes for a reasons class. This is to allow contestants time to make observations\, take notes\, and fill out their placing cards.\n\n\n\nOne class of oral reasons will be required for intermediates and two classes of oral reasons will be required for seniors. Written reasons will not be a part of the contest. Oral reasons will be scored using the WA 4-H Oral Reasons Score Card\, C0737 or C0739. Intermediates may use notes when giving oral reasons; excessive reference to notes will be severely penalized. Seniors may not use notes when giving oral reasons. Juniors will not give oral reasons.\n\n\n\nOnly contestants and contest officials will be allowed in the contest arena; portions of the bleachers will also be restricted to contestants only.\n\n\n\nAll horses using in judging classes will be considered sound of limb\, eye\, wind\, and mouth. All tack and attire used in riding classes will be considered correct.\n\n\n\nNo printed study material is allowed in the contest area. Clipboards and blank note paper are allowed.\n\n\n\nIn the event of a tied score\, the following criteria will be used:\n\nSenior Tie Breakers\n\n1 – Total of Oral Reasons Scores\n\n\n\n2 – Total of Oral Reasons Classes Placing Scores\n\n\n\n3 – Total of Halter Classes Scores\n\n\n\n\n\nIntermediate Tie Breakers:\n\n1 – Oral Reasons Score\n\n\n\n2 – Oral Reasons Class Placing Score\n\n\n\n3 – Total of Halter Classes Scores\n\n\n\n\n\nJunior Tie Breakers:\n\n1 – Halter Class score for class used for Senior and Intermediate Oral Reasons\n\n\n\n2 – Riding Class Score for class used for Senior Oral Reasons\n\n\n\n3 – Total of Halter Classes Scores\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe top four age eligible senior winners will be identified to represent Washington State 4-H and compete at the Eastern 4-H Equine Roundup in Louisville\, KY in November. The eligible senior winners will need to make the decision within five days of the WA state contest\, if they are going to attend Eastern 4-H Equine Roundup in Louisville\, KY. Only the registration fee is covered by WSU 4-H.
