Laurie Frank)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Purpose: <\/strong>To help participants learn about each other by finding similarities and differences, building trust, and understanding the importance of common ground\u2014especially in teamwork and politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong> Deck of cards (enough for each participant to have one card)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Introduction:<\/strong> &#8220;We\u2019re going to do an activity called Differences and Commonalities. Everyone stand in a circle. I\u2019ll give each of you a card\u2014don\u2019t look at it yet. When I say \u2018Go!\u2019 look at your card and quickly find three other people with the same suit so you\u2019re in a group of four. When your group is ready, put your finger on your nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\">Once you\u2019re in your group, share your names and come up with four things you all have in common that you can\u2019t see\u2014like hobbies, favorite foods, or experiences. Each group will share one with everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\">Then, we\u2019ll mix it up! Trade cards with three people from other groups so you don\u2019t know what card you have. When I say \u2018Go!\u2019 again, find your new group of four. This time, share names and find four differences that aren\u2019t obvious. Again, each group will share one with the whole group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Large Group Reflection:<\/strong> &#8220;Finding similarities is important in groups, including ours. The more we find common ground, the better we work together. What are some places in politics where finding common ground is important? By the end of this lesson, we\u2019ll have more ideas about why this matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Group Agreement<\/strong>&nbsp; (Not needed as separate section, as it is in the dignity index activity. Cover there.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n    <\/div><\/section>\n\n<section  class=\"wsu-section  wsu-color-background--white\"  >\r\n        \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked wsu-heading--mark-color-vineyard\" id=\"activity-15\">Activity 15: Dignity Index (80 minutes) <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Reminder of the Dignity Index from the first meeting (15 minutes)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Begin with a brief discussion about communication in politics:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask: &#8220;How would you describe the typical tone of political debates you&#8217;ve seen?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask: &#8220;How does this tone affect our democracy and ability to solve problems?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Introduce the Dignity Index:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Explain that the <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/4h\/youth\/kyg\/curriculum\/legislative-day-one\/#handout-3\">Dignity Index<\/a> is a tool developed to measure the level of dignity in communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present the 8-point scale:\n<ul>\n<li>Lower scores (1-4): Characterized by contempt, dehumanization, dismissal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher scores (5-8): Characterized by respect, recognition of complexity, willingness to listen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share examples of communication at different points on the scale:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Level 2: &#8220;Those people are destroying our state with their radical agenda.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level 5: &#8220;While I disagree with their approach, I understand they&#8217;re trying to address a real problem.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level 8: &#8220;This is a complex issue with valid concerns on multiple sides. Today, you will work on the research, and in Meeting 4, you will pitch your bill ideas to a panel of \u2018Sharks\u2019 who have the power to support your legislation. Delegates should pick three public testimonies to watch from this public hearing, and assess on a scale of 1-5 (1=poor, 5=excellent). A big part of team building is noticing what we do that helps us get along and follow our group agreement. So today, we\u2019re going to share compliments about things you appreciated the group doing well. I\u2019ll start, and then we\u2019ll go around the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Reflections<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> To help participants connect what they learned about decision-making and legislative processes to real-life situations. Reflection reinforces learning and prepares them to apply these skills at the KYG Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Materials:<\/strong> <a href=\"#handout-3\">Handouts with reflection questions<\/a> (one per group of 3) OR post questions on a large poster for everyone to see. (Tip: If time is short, use pairs instead of groups of 3.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" wsu-max-width--hero\"><strong>Introduction:<\/strong> Today we focused on learning about responsible citizenship, especially as it relates to how we interact with each other and how our ideas can make our community better.
