Although gardening experience is not required to participate in the program, having a willingness to learn and to serve your community as a volunteer are highly encouraged and recommended.<\/p>\n<p>All WSU Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Volunteers receive in-depth horticulture training provided by WSU faculty, staff, and specialists. Learn practical techniques, connect with experts, and discover how your actions contribute to a healthier future for all.<\/p>\n<p>Green School offers <strong>two courses for distinct purposes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/sample-page\/washington-gardener-certificate\/\"><strong>Washington Gardener Certificate<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 this course is for individuals looking to enhance their gardening skills through research-based horticultural and environmental stewardship, for professional and\/or personal development.\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li><strong>Please note<\/strong> that enrolling in Green School to pursue the Washington Gardener Certificate, does <strong>not<\/strong> lead to a Master Gardener certification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>WSU Extension Master Gardener Program <\/strong>\u2013 this course is for those who wish to serve their community by becoming a WSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. Read below about the training requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Go to the following resources to explore more about Green School:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For a comparison of what\u2019s the same and what\u2019s different between the Washington Gardener Certificate versus the WSU Extension Master Gardener Program, <a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/course-options\/\">go to the <strong>Green School course options<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For tuition and fees, <a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/home\/wgs-fee-schedule\/\">go to the <strong>Green School 2026-2027 Fee Schedule<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"cpb-row  pad-top gutter single\" style=\"padding-top:1rem;padding-bottom:0rem\"><div class=\"cpb-row-inner\"><div class=\"cpb-column  one\" style=\"\"><h3 class=\"cpb-subtitle crimson-text\">\n\t\t\tAre you interested in joining the WSU Extension Benton-Franklin County Master Gardener Program?\t<\/h3>\n<div class=\"cpb-textblock cpb-item \"><p>To become a WSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer is a <strong>12-month-long commitment<\/strong> in which you must complete these three training activities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>WA Green School Course<\/strong> \u2013 designed and developed by WSU, delivered online over a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/home\/wgs-schedule\/\">20-week period from October 2026 to February 2027<\/a> where you explore a variety of topics specific to the Pacific Northwest and Eastern Washington climate such as soil, plants, insects, and wildlife. Consists of textbook chapter readings and online training modules including virtual review sessions with WSU faculty or staff. The expected learning time or workload is 120 hours. Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/\">WA Green School<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local Volunteer Training<\/strong> \u2013 supplemental training provided by the Benton-Franklin County Master Gardener Program, which consists of <strong>ten<\/strong> <strong>Saturday<\/strong> <strong>in-person training sessions<\/strong> primarily in Kennewick on the following dates from<strong> 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>October 3, 2026<\/li>\n<li>October 24, 2026<\/li>\n<li>November 7, 2026<\/li>\n<li>November 21, 2026<\/li>\n<li>December 12, 2026<\/li>\n<li>January 16, 2027<\/li>\n<li>January 23, 2027<\/li>\n<li>February 6, 2027<\/li>\n<li>February 20, 2027<\/li>\n<li>March 6, 2027<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volunteer Internship<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>40 hours<\/strong> of service to be completed within the first 12 months. Volunteer service includes answering questions at our Plant \/ Ask a Master Gardener Clinics, helping maintain our Demonstration Garden, assisting our Adult and Youth Education teams, and much more. Work alongside Certified Master Gardeners to apply your newly gained knowledge and skills, gain confidence in our community education outreach efforts, and experience what it truly means to be an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After completion of Green School, local volunteer training, and your internship commitment, you will become a Certified Extension Master Gardener volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"cpb-subtitle crimson-text\">\n\t\t\tBeing an Extension Master Gardener volunteer is an ongoing commitment\t<\/h3>\n<div class=\"cpb-textblock cpb-item \"><p>We begin our annual renewal process for all Master Gardener volunteers in the Fall season. Annual certification in the Extension Master Gardener Program is not automatic. There is no fee associated with annual certification.<\/p>\n<p>To maintain certification, volunteers must give at least <strong>25 hours<\/strong> of service and earn at least<strong> 10 hours<\/strong> of continuing education each year.
