Is this drippy Pacific Northwest weather hindering your vegetable garden plans? Commiserate with us on the next garden walk or boast of your successes. Let’s share how to keep rain and cool temperatures from dampening our gardening enthusiasm.

Join Clallam County Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton, Audreen Williams and Jan Bartron on Saturday, May 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Fifth Street Community Garden as they wander through the garden highlighting various appropriate topics.

Participants will hear about other topics including but not limited to refraining from planting tomatoes too early, dealing with various spring pests (cabbage loopers, cabbage worms and pea leaf weevils) and crop rotation. Bring your questions and get timely advice.

The monthly walks are free and open to the public. They continue every second Saturday of the month through September 10. The Fifth Street Community Garden is located at 328 E Fifth Street in Port Angeles just off Peabody across from City Hall.

Every second Saturday through September from 10 -11:30 a.m., Washington State University Extension Clallam County Master Gardeners will lead a fast-paced walk through the Port Angeles Fifth Street Community Garden to examine what is happening (or should be happening) in local vegetable gardens.

Walk participants will:

  • Learn what needs to be done in the vegetable garden.
  • Learn what problems are likely to appear each month.
  • Learn what control measures exist for common pest and diseases.
  • Get timely advice.

All walks are free and open to the public and occur rain or shine. The walks are beneficial to persons new to vegetable gardening, as well as more seasoned vegetable gardeners.

The Fifth Street Community Garden is located at 328 E. Fifth Street in Port Angeles, just off Peabody and right across from City Hall. The garden, developed on city property in 2011, includes over fifty 9×12-foot plots worked by local gardeners.

Clallam County Master Gardeners are volunteers who enjoy plants, gardening and doing community outreach and education about sustainable gardening. Volunteers have taken the WSU Master Gardener Training and have access to the experts and the latest research-based resources from WSU and other sources that provide the best information for the North Olympic Peninsula.
