SUMMARY:Digging Deeper Educational Series: Growing Tomatoes 5-21-22
DESCRIPTION:Come learn tomatoes with Jan Bartron\, Jeanette Stehr-Green\, Audreen Williams\, and Laurel Moulton.\n“Growing Tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest” on Saturday\, May 21 \nHas our short growing season frustrated your efforts to grow vine-ripened tomatoes? Are you left with grass-green tomatoes on tree-like bushes at the end of the summer? Don’t give up! You can grow tomatoes successfully in the Pacific Northwest. \nOn Saturday\, May 21\, from 10:30 am to 12 noon\, Clallam County Master Gardeners Jan Bartron\, Betsy Burlingame\, Laurel Moulton\, Dave Rambin\, Jeanette Stehr-Green\, and Audreen Williams (aka the Tomato Dream Team) will share tips on growing tomatoes successfully in our short\, cool growing season. The presentation will take place at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim. \nParticipants will learn what tomato varieties grow best in our area\, how to plant tomatoes to optimize available heat and how to protect them from the cold. Participants also will learn how to care for tomato plants through the growing season to encourage fruit production and prevent diseases and grow tomatoes in a greenhouse. The workshop also will include demonstrations and displays on planting and pruning tomato bushes\, the use of season extenders and trellises\, and common tomato problems. \nDavid Rambin and Betsy Burlingame in greenhouse.\n“Growing Tomatoes in the Pacific Northwest” is part of the Master Gardener Digging Deeper educational series which is free and open to the public and occurs on the first and third Saturdays of most months. The presentation will be held in-person\, out of doors at the Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden. Attendees will be asked to mask regardless of COVID vaccination status and maintain an appropriate distance from others. Community members should stay home if they are sick. Physical presence at the Demonstration Garden will be considered an attestation that the attendee is symptom-free and has not had a recent known exposure to COVID. \nIn addition to the scheduled educational presentation on May 21\, a team of Clallam County Master Gardeners will be available at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden from 10 am to 1 pm to answer all gardening questions. Digging Deeper attendees are encouraged to bring samples of garden problems or pests for diagnosis and recommended control measures. \nAttendees are encouraged to check the Clallam County Master Gardener online calendar for updates about the location of the talk at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/.
