SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Growing Inclusively
DESCRIPTION:Photo of Benji Astrachan and banana squash by Benji Astrachan\nAccording to the United States Department of Agriculture\, about 34 million people in the U.S\, including 9 million children\, experience food insecurity each year. Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active\, healthy life. Growing your own vegetables and fruits is a fun\, healthy and delicious way to add fresh produce to your diet. Did you know that what you grow can help others fight food insecurity? \nJoin Washington State University Extension educator\, Benji Astrachan\, Thursday\, October 13th from noon – 1:00 p.m. for a Green Thumb Garden Tips Zoom presentation titled: \n“Growing Inclusively: Supporting Local Food Security Through the Power of the Garden Plot” \nand find out how you can help curtail food insecurity. \nFind a direct link to the presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 920 0799 1742 \nPasscode: 709395 \nBenji will cover the basics of food insecurity and efforts towards increasing access to healthy locally grown food across Clallam County. He will speak about the different programs and organizations working towards a healthier local food system for all community members\, and attendees will hear about how they can become involved with their own gardening interests and skills. \nBenji will give gardeners a robust understanding of where and how to contribute to food access efforts; what kinds of foods may be grown by avid gardeners that are most needed and appreciated by those experiencing food insecurity; and how to get involved as a gardener in food access efforts. Gardeners will be able to better understand their role and potential for supporting their neighbors in need and have clear pathways to involvement and improvement through their unique gardening skills. \nBenji’s experience on these topics comes through both personal and professional involvement. As a farmworker on local operations\, and as a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Education Coordinator with WSU Extension\, he has been directly involved in the production and redistribution of quality healthy food on the Olympic Peninsula for years. He is passionate about preventing food waste\, educating future generations about local food and agriculture\, and ensuring equity in access to local foods. \nBenji leads a number of programs at WSU Extension including farm gleaning\, farm-to-school garden activities\, the Little Free Pantry networks and other local food access projects. He is also a farmworker at SisterLand Farms in Port Angeles and has worked at farms and gardens of all sizes and operation types across Clallam County and New England. When not growing\, eating and redistributing local food\, he also enjoys a number of outdoor activities like hiking\, surfing and biking\, and volunteers with many community organizations. \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - An Orchard Floor Experiment
DESCRIPTION:Is the soil beneath your fruit trees helping or hindering your orchard’s health? Water\, nutrients and healthy roots are essential to get the highest quality fruit and most productivity from your orchard trees. And a better understanding of the biological\, physical and chemical characteristics of soil can help you make the most of these essential functions in orchards. \nJoin Clallam County Master Gardener Paul Kolesnikoff: \nThursday\, November 10th from noon – 1:00 p.m. \nfor the Green Thumb Garden Tips Zoom presentation \n“An Orchard Floor Experiment” \nand discover what you can do to optimize your orchard’s soil potential. \nIn addition to the basics of the soil ecosystem\, Paul will cover various methods for soil treatment in an orchard. He will also look at some methods that have been used locally\, their results and plans for future improvements. “Gardeners will improve their understanding of the soil around their fruit trees and how they can improve it\,” Paul said. \nPaul’s love of gardening began early at age eight when he begged his parents to let him plant a garden. “Every day\, my eager child eyes watched for the first signs of life. When I first saw beans poking through\, I ran to tell my Mom\, but I was so excited that my legs wouldn’t work\, and I fell down repeatedly\,” Paul remembers. His green-thumb life followed him across the country with gardening stints in New England\, New Jersey\, the Colorado mountains and then finally to Port Angeles\, Washington. When not gardening\, Paul enjoys biking\, hiking\, and sailing. He is a graduate of WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners class of 2019. \nFind a direct link to the presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 920 0799 1742 \nPasscode: 709395 \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions\, call 360-565-2679.

SUMMARY:Green Thumb: The Strange Tale of the Poinsettia
DESCRIPTION:It’s that cheerful time of year again when holiday tables\, fireplace mantles and festive windowsills sport the elegant and familiar red and green houseplant—Euphorbia pulcherrima—better known as the poinsettia. \nJoin Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green on Thursday\, December 8th from noon – 1:00 p.m. for a Green Thumb Garden Tips Zoom presentation and learn more about these gorgeous houseplants and how to keep them thriving all year long: \n“The Strange Tale of the Poinsettia: The Past and Future of a Holiday Tradition” \nDecember 8th\, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm via Zoom. \nA direct link to the presentation can be found here. \nThis will be the final Green Thumb Education Series program of 2022. Next year\, we will be hosting these in a hybrid fashion with both in-person and Zoom options available. Come back and check our online calendar for all of the most up-to-date information. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 920 0799 1742 \nPasscode: 709395 \nDid you know that the poinsettia is a plant whose production and sale contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the U.S. economy each year? Jeanette will discuss the origin of the poinsettia\, its introduction to the United States and its transformation to the most popular holiday gift plant around the world. She will talk about the challenges in the commercial production of poinsettias\, their growth requirements and what it takes to get them to bloom in time for Christmas. \nJeanette will discuss how to select a quality poinsettia for your own home or to give as a gift\, how to care for a poinsettia to keep it looking beautiful through the holidays and how to get a poinsettia to bloom for subsequent holiday seasons. She will be ready to answer questions not only about poinsettias\, but all holiday gift plants. \nJeanette is a houseplant enthusiast and is especially fond of holiday gift plants. Through independent study\, she has learned about the culture and care of poinsettias\, amaryllises and Christmas cactuses. She has had hands on experience with these plants\, growing many of them in her own home and experimenting with their propagation and bloom time. \nJeanette has been a WSU-certified Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003. She enjoys teaching others about gardening and writes articles for both the Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette. She also contributes to gardening programs on local radio stations KONP and KSQM. Jeanette attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2010 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year. \nWe hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season! \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Where Are All The Weeds?
DESCRIPTION:Spring may be many weeks away\, but there lurks a force to be reckoned with in the garden as soon as the days grow longer—weeds. Join David Whiting for the Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation “Where Are All The Weeds?” and discover where weeds are now and what you can do to keep them at bay when they finally arrive. \nThe Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation “Where Are All The Weeds?” will be held in person on: \nThursday\, January 26th from Noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Main Library’s Carver Room at 2210 S. Peabody Street in Port Angeles. \nWe will also be broadcasting the presentation via Zoom. \nFind a direct link to the presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782  \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830  \nPasscode: 676224  \nSome gardeners spend little time weeding with few weeds in their landscapes and gardens. Others spend hours and hours only to have their gardens covered with weeds. Why? David’s class on the science of weeds looks at causes of weed problems and various management techniques to hinder their spread. \nDavid will take the audience through different scenarios on weed prevention\, as management depends on the specific weeds and the gardening conditions. “This class gives a variety of weed management techniques that the individual gardener can incorporate\, depending on their specific situation\,” he said.  \nDavid Whiting is an avid gardener and retired Professor and Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University. David has spent most of his professional career at the county or state level leading Master Gardener Programs.  \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions\, call 360-565-2678.

SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Fungus-Based Insecticides
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from the trunk of an ash tree\, an emerald ash borer is infected with Beauveria bassiana\, an insect-pathogenic fungus that may prove to be a valuable biocontrol for this pest.\nFungi have been assisting humanity in many ways for eons. They are essential in the decomposition process\, as well as in farming\, fermentation\, medications and as food. Now\, fungi may be able to help us control pests as a natural insecticide. Join Clallam County Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Fungus-Based Insecticides” to learn more about the potential for these fabulous fungi-based pest killers. \nJoin the presentation on Zoom via this link. \nOr join us in person at the Port Angeles Food Bank. \nTraditional synthetic pesticides may not be right for every situation\, and some are overused so much that pests are becoming more resistant to them. Biopesticides—or fungi that kill pests—will be discussed as a potential alternative to these traditional pesticides. The discussion will help provide some gardeners with an additional tool for controlling insect pests. “I have not yet used such insecticides but became interested in the topic due to observing fungus-killed insects in the garden\, and being fascinated by the ability of some fungi to control the behavior of insects\,” Muriel said. \nMuriel will discuss how fungus-based pesticides work using their individualized “chemical weapons\,” and their potential benefits to gardeners\, farmers\, and homeowners. In addition\, she will offer insights into the difficulties of making such insecticides. \nMuriel began her career as a high school teacher in Dar es Salaam\, Tanzania. She went on to become a graduate student at the University of Washington where she earned a Ph.D. in genetics. Muriel was a Professor of Biology at University of California\, Los Angeles for two years and then taught biology at University of California\, San Diego for 35 years before retiring to Port Angeles in 2008. \nClallam County Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt checks for pests on her squash plants.\nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Fungus-Based Insecticides” will be held in person on Thursday\, February 9th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Food Bank located at 632 N Oakridge Drive in Port Angeles and on Zoom. Once at the Food Bank\, please proceed upstairs to their Community Meeting Room for the live presentation. There will be signs directing you. Parking is available at the front of the building\, but you can also park behind the building to leave room for the Food Bank’s other visitors. \nYou can join the Zoom Meeting via Phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830 \nPasscode: 676224 \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions\, call 360-565-2678.
