SUMMARY:Green Thumb: A Common Sense Guide to Fungicide Use
DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener\, Bob Cain\, will teach a class about fungal plant problems and how to safely manage them on Thursday\, April 8 at noon.\nJoin Bob Cain\, whose master’s and doctoral theses were based on how plants produce their own fungicides in response to infection\, and how soil fungi produce antibiotics\, respectively\, to learn about common fungal disease issues on the Olympic Peninsula and how to treat them with organic and conventional fungicides. He will discuss the environmental conditions which create susceptibility for fungal disease and ways to mitigate the environmental triggers. He writes a monthly article on vegetable growing for the Clallam County Master Gardener Between the Vines newsletter as well as articles on plant disease and pests. He has been and continues to be a frequent contributor to local newspaper gardening columns and local radio gardening programs. Cain is the 2009 Master Gardener Intern of the Year\, 2011 Master Gardener of the year and has attained Lifetime Achievement status for continued service to Clallam County Master Gardeners. He served as Manager of the Woodcock Demonstration \nGarden for seven years\, is a past President of the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County and has overseen the Woodcock Orchard and garden spray program for the last seven years. \nGreen Thumb Education Series Presentations are held from 12 to 1 pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of most months. Talks are currently only being offered by online streaming\, due to current social distancing concerns with COVID-19. SUMMARY:5th St. Community Garden: Self guided garden walk
DESCRIPTION:Do you find it difficult to learn about vegetable gardening from books and lectures? Are you tired of sitting at your computer searching for gardening information when you want to be in the garden? Come learn at the 5th Street Community Garden in Port Angeles. \nDue to continued COVID-19 restrictions\, WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners are implementing self-guided tours to teach local gardeners about vegetable gardening on the North Olympic Peninsula. These tours are in lieu of monthly garden walks provided in the past. \nAs with the garden walks\, tours will focus on what is happening (or should be happening) in the vegetable garden each month and will highlight \n\nWhat vegetables grow well in our climate\,\nWhat needs to be done in the vegetable garden\, and\nWhat control measures exists for common pests and diseases.\n\nTours start Saturday\, April10\, 2021 and will continue through September or until mandated restrictions are lifted. New topics will be determined every month and identified by the second Saturday of the month. Poles flagging focal points and tour sheets will be available for two weeks. \nHow will it work? Up to 10 topics about vegetable gardening will be identified by poles and coordinating numbers. Visitors are invited to pick up a tour sheet\, locate the numerals and test their gardening knowledge. \nThe Fifth Street Community Garden is located at 328 E. Fifth Street in Port Angeles just off Peabody\, right across from City Hall. The garden includes over 50 individual 9×12-foot plots that are rented by community members. You may visit during daylight hours. All visitors are asked not to sample any fruit and vegetables without permission form the renters. COVID-19 protocols\, including social distancing and wearing masks\, are encouraged while visiting the garden. Two picnic tables are available\, so bring a picnic and enjoy the everchanging landscape. The garden has no bathroom facilities or garbage pickup. Please take your trash with you. SUMMARY:Digging Deeper: Newcomers to the Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener\, Margery Whites\, will introduce newcomers to the North Olympic Peninsula to tips and tricks for successful gardening in Clallam County.\nNew residents to the area may face gardening and landscaping challenges in the unique climate of the Pacific Northwest. To address these challenges\, Whites will cover 4 different subject areas\, including choosing appropriate plants for a homeowner’s property based on their specific microclimate; basic landscape planning that will help homeowners grow and maintain a sustainable garden; and problem solving techniques to address problems brought on by our wet winters and dry summers. DESCRIPTION:Master Gardener\, Muriel Nesbitt\, will discuss the pros and cons of tilling soil in the garden on Thursday\, April 22 at noon.\nHave you ever thought of creating a vegetable garden that does not require tilling? Muriel Nesbitt\, an educator who taught biology for 35 years at the University of California\, San Diego\, will talk about the benefits and draw-backs of using soil-disturbing cultivation in the garden\, and what factors gardeners should consider when deciding whether a low tillage garden is right for their situation. She will discuss some techniques for achieving some of the benefits of tilling without damaging soil structure.
