SUMMARY:Digging Deeper Education Series - Novel Small Fruits for Home Gardens 8-6-22
DESCRIPTION:Cyndi Ross will share about black and red currants\nWith so many small fruits available to home gardeners in the Pacific Northwest\, why not grow something different … something you cannot buy at the local grocery store? \nOn Saturday\, August 6\, from 10:30 am to 12 noon\, local gardeners Cyndi Ross and Marty Kaler will talk about a few of the more unusual small fruits that can be grown on the North Olympic Peninsula. The presentation will take place at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim. \nCyndi will talk about red\, white\, and black currants. Marty will talk about aronia and honeyberries. They will cover everything you need to know to grow these small fruits in the home garden including recommended varieties\, site selection and preparation\, irrigation\, fertilization\, and pruning. \nCyndi\, originally from Texas\, received a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy/Production Horticulture from Texas Tech University. After graduation\, she moved to Minnesota where she worked as a chemist for 27 years focusing on cleaning solutions for food and beverage companies. In 2000 Cyndi joined Ramsey County Master Gardeners in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, and began growing currants. In 2011\, she moved to the North Olympic Peninsula with thoughts of growing wine grapes. After realizing the climate was not well-suited for this crop\, she began growing currants\, using the knowledge she gained in Minnesota. Cyndi now sells her currants to Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum\, Washington\, which uses her black currants to make an award-winning cider and her red currants to make a dessert wine. \nMarty Kaler will share about aronia and honeyberries.\nMarty Kaler is the former owner of Strait Music in Port Angeles. He grew up on a farm in Ohio and moved to Washington in 1976. He fell in love with aronia berries due to their reported health benefits and began growing them (and other small fruits) in 2013. Marty considers himself a hobby berry grower and has learned through personal research and trial and error. He now sells aronia and honeyberry plants wholesale to Sunny Farms and Airport Garden Center. In addition to growing small fruits\, Marty plays music with his lovely wife\, Marilyn\, and others and has performed with local bands Twisted Roots\, Tin Sandwich\, and others. \nCyndi and Marty are ready to share their enthusiasm and many years experience growing these small fruits with local gardeners. Please join us for an interesting and informative presentation. \nDigging Deeper presentations are held from 10:30 am to 12 noon on the first and third Saturdays of most months. Presentations cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners. Presentations are free and open to the public and are scheduled for 90-minutes to allow for demonstrations and questions from viewers. The August Digging Deeper presentations are scheduled to occur out of doors\, in-person at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim. Attendees will be asked to mask regardless of COVID vaccination status and stay home if they are ill. Attendees are encouraged to check the Clallam County Master Gardener online calendar for updates about the location of the talk at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/. SUMMARY:Green Thumb Lecture Series - New Vegetable Varieties 8-11-22
DESCRIPTION:New sweet potatoes varieties can be grown in Clallam\nAre you growing bored with planting the same thing in your vegetable garden year after year? The Olympic Peninsula’s growing season isn’t always kind to vegetable varieties that need a warmer climate or a longer growing season. Join Carol Miles\, Director of Washington State University’s Mount Vernon Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center\, for a look at new vegetable varieties that can bring renewed interest and additional nutrition to your garden and table. Carol’s Zoom presentation is from noon – 1:00 p.m. on Thursday\, August 11th and is part of Clallam County Master Gardeners’ Green Thumb Gardening Tips education series. \nFind a direct link to the Zoom presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 920 0799 1742 \nPasscode: 709395 \nNew cantaloupe varieties can be grown in Clallam County.\nCarol will explore interesting new vegetable crops that can be grown in western Washington—like sweet potatoes\, bulb fennel\, cantaloupe and popping beans. She will also talk about general production information\, which varieties are suitable for our area and handling procedures to ensure success. \nWhy try something new in your garden? New vegetable varieties help to increase diversity and success in home garden production\, provide a more diverse and healthy local diet\, and they can expand your understanding of new growing opportunities based on climate and variety selection. \nCarol has been trialing new crops for western Washington for almost 30 years. She works with breeders to test their advanced breeding lines that can result in the release of new varieties that are suitable for our region. “I especially enjoy the final test for all crops I work with…how good are they to eat\,” Carol said. \nCarol received her M.S. and Ph.D. from the Department of Fruit and Vegetable Science at Cornell University. She joined Washington State University in 1994 and is the WSU Vegetable Extension Specialist and Director of the WSU Mount Vernon Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center. Carol specializes in vegetable production\, especially new crops\, new varieties and organic and sustainable production practices. \nGreen Thumb Education Series Presentations are held from 12 to 1 pm on the second and fourth Thursdays of most months. Talks are currently only being offered by online streaming\, due to current social distancing concerns with COVID-19. Please see instructions for accessing the live stream. Presentations and associated printed materials will be archived on the local articles and archived presentations portion of our website. These events are free\, but donations to help support the WSU Clallam County Extension Master Gardener program are appreciated.
