We hope you enjoy the other fabulous gardens included in this year’s lineup and we apologize for any inconvenience.  \n\nThe Petals & Pathways Home Garden Tour will be in Port Angeles this year with six outstanding gardens\, plus an added attraction for the more adventurous walker\, Websters Woods. All these gardens\, including Websters Woods will have Master Gardeners on site to assist and inform the garden enthusiast. \nThe Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County hosts these tours in which homeowners with fabulous gardens have offered to show their creations for the Foundation’s Fundraiser. These tours\, along with the Annual Plant Sale at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden in Sequim help support the Foundation’s many community projects. \nThese gardens are all playfully named for their uniqueness such as “Islands of Color” and “Vedanta Retreat”. \nThese gardens feature whimsical artist creations that enhance the landscape’s natural beauty: \n\nan urban garden paradise with beautifully crafted wood structures\nsoft bark cushioned pathways through tall red cedars\nJapanese influenced “Niwaki” pruning techniques\nand a lovely Victorian home and garden.\n\nThe Master Gardener Selection Committee looks for diversity\, accessibility\, and creativity in every garden selected. \nHere is a brief description on what is being offered for viewing on this tour: \nISLANDS OF COLOR \n“Islands of Colors” is located just off the Lower Elwha Road. This 2.6-acre property sits on a sunny bluff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There are two distinct areas to explore: the front yard\, which features several trails that wander through tall western red cedar and big leaf maple trees\, and feature numerous unusual nursery stumps and native vegetation; and the park-like backyard\, which faces directly towards Mt Baker and features colorful beds of perennials\, annuals\, and shrubs; a fenced-in vegetable and fruit garden with apple trees\, several types of berries\, and cool-climate vegetables; and sitting areas for relaxing and enjoying the view. Each of the trails in the front yard have been given unique names that highlight key natural features such as the “Cedar Bend Trail” with a western red cedar whose trunk is bent at a 90-degree angle; a perfect spot for a family photo. \nNORTHWEST WONDERLAND (Due to unforeseen circumstances\, regretfully\, this garden will not be on the 2024 Tour) \nMIYAKO’S GARDEN \nThe owners had been “chasing” winters annually in Victoria BC. When this property in a well-established neighborhood became available in April of 2019\, they purchased it. John made a solemn promise to the prior owner to improve the unique garden. John has added patios\, walkways and locally purchased stones to represent flowing streams. “Miyako’s Garden” (named in honor of the owner’s dear late mother) has earned the 2022 Summer Green Thumb Award from the Port Angeles Garden Club. There is a passion for shapes and the owner grooms many of the plants\, bushes and trees into cloud shapes known in the Japanese technique as “Niwaki”. The crown jewel in the back yard is a formal tea house which is furnished with traditional tea house furniture. The iron tree with chandelier crystals is extraordinary when the sun shines on them. The owner visited a forest in Japan years ago with an entire section of native forest trees with these crystals hanging from them and dreamed one day of duplicating the vision in his own way. “Miyako’s” garden is a must see! \nHIDDEN TREASURES \nHave you ever collected something\, not knowing why\, but knowing that inspiration would hit one day? Artists are notorious for this\, and Terri is no exception. Terri is a ceramic artist. She just sees things differently. A collection of doors and SHAZAM! The back garden’s privacy fence is “aDOORable!” Out front\, a garden divider derived from glass doors and vintage recycled glass objects captures the attention of passersby. Don and Terri embarked on this garden adventure enamored by PNW evergreens and maples\, some that are contorted into a variety of whimsical shapes. Their sense of humor and love of art is evident as you wander through the abundance of perennials. The grass from the original yard was removed and replaced with chips and walkable groundcover plants to encourage people to explore the hidden treasures that can only be appreciated when you get up close and personal. Recipients of the PA Garden Club Green Thumb Award Fall 2023\, this garden will inspire your creative side. (164) \nFOREVER GARDEN \nA variety of tall\, blooming perennials border the lawns around this 120-year-old Victorian home. Upon entering the property\, one finds the comforting umbrella shade of a mature\, twisted Japanese Maple tree. The east side of the garden features plum\, cherry and apple trees along with blueberries\, and strawberries. The manicured Leland Cypress hedge\, towers over bleeding hearts\, lilies\, delphinium\, salvias\, primrose\, geranium and fern. On the back side of the hedge is the guest cottage and patio surrounded by strategically planted trees and shrubs creating a wonderful private retreat to read\, contemplate\, or visit friends. Opposite the cottage is an owner-built greenhouse extending the gardeners’ growing season. Since living at this property for 11 years these crafty gardeners have added the patio and walkway; built the shop\, greenhouse\, potting shed\, and back porch cover plus all the red brick flower beds. \nVEDANTA RETREAT \nThis quaint city lot in residential Port Angeles\, Vedanta Retreat\, offers a peaceful sanctuary with an assortment of perennials that attract hummingbirds\, butterflies\, and bees and with raised vegetable beds forming a border around the backyard. There are “before” pictures showing how this garden was transformed by the current homeowners’ makeover! The first step was to strip the grass and place a few stones. As much as they love the plants\, the homeowners recognized a need for structure. Rock paths\, sandstone\, Lorenzo’s woodwork\, and birdbaths skillfully placed throughout the yard\, give this garden a comforting and healing sensation. Well-placed groundcovers gracefully transition the garden from the hardscape to the plants. Come get ideas for transforming your urban lawn into a peaceful sanctuary. \nA PATCHWORK OF PRODUCE \nThe 5th Street Community Garden is like a patchwork quilt of 54 rentable plots. All in one place on a site comprised of two City lots you will find an assortment of garden design layouts as confined by the 9’ x 12’ plot size. As you walk the grass paths notice examples of different planting arrangements including: trellis systems\, seasonal plant protection\, and use of raised beds. There is a 3-bin composting system\, tools for sharing\, and community areas along the front fence and near the picnic tables. Only organic growing and earth-friendly practices are used. This means no overhead sprinklers and the use of chemical insecticides\, herbicides\, and fertilizers are prohibited. The plot renters enjoy a community of sharing ideas and the social aspect of coming together through the growing season. Clallam County Master Gardeners have enjoyed a presence in this garden since its beginning in 2011 and offer periodic demonstrations and monthly 2nd Saturday Garden Walks. \nWEBSTER’S WOODS SCULPTURE PARK \nWebster’s Woods is a 5-acre sculpture park surrounding the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center gallery. The forested trails contain a permanent collection of artworks\, as well as annual rotating outdoor exhibitions. Visitors can also enjoy original poems located on signboards throughout the park as a part of the Port Angeles Poetry in the Park program in collaboration with Olympic Peninsula Authors. Webster’s Woods is open daily from sunrise to sunset and entrance is free. Wear appropriate shoes as the trails can be challenging. Self-guided maps are available.

Join Clallam County Master Gardeners Keith Dekker\, Tom Del Hotal and Gordon Clark for a free fruit tree pruning workshop \nSaturday\, March 2nd 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nat the Woodcock Demonstration Garden – 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim \nPruning your fruit trees the right way can make them healthier\, more productive and more accessible for you at harvest time. For 10 years\, the owners have lovingly tended the property making regular visits to host picnics and barbecues for family and friends. Then in2010\, they made the permanent move and began building a home with their own hands and adding a greenhouse and gardens galore. This inviting property has hosted wedding parties\, travelers and plein air artists who wish to enjoy the breathtaking views from this Happy Valley paradise. With the recent addition of several new themed gardens\, there are about 25 unique places to explore. Walk the Tranquility Trail and immerse yourself\nin the serenity of the lush landscape. You’ll find a surprise around every bend. The homeowners do all their own planning\, landscaping and maintenance in the gardens and as much as possible have made use of repurposed\, reclaimed\, recycled and refurbished items to create a colorful yet relaxed environment. So come enjoythe myriad of native plants and trees immersed among a profusion of annuals and perennials. Experience thisgarden with all your senses. \nLife Spring Farm\n* * * * *\nThe Haley family came to McFarland Farm in 1989. The lovely garden is set at the base of Burnt Mountain in the middle of a soil-rich\, long-abandoned pasture. Jean Haley created the foundation for this garden. Since 2018\, Sandy Haley has been renovating and personalizing the garden space with the intention of creating a sacred and restorative place for reflection and access to nature. The landscape is like an artistic canvas with textured brush strokes of dwarf pine\, silky rhododendron leaves and delicate\, lacy heavenly bamboo with the soul soothing trickle of water. This peaceful setting invites reflection with many places to sit and decompress while enjoying panoramic views. Explore the verdant landscape that includes over 50 plants and trees\, and savor a\nfull immersion garden experience as you stroll the delightful walkways. Enjoy a celebration of 30 different roses\, delight in the ancient apple and pear trees\, amble through the berry garden and visit the unique greenhouse. Bring a picnic lunch and spend some time in nature surrounded by this charming garden. Life Spring Farm will inspire you to transform your own garden into a peaceful refuge. \nEnglish Inspired Garden\n* * * * *\nWhen John and Judy Farnsworth moved here from Ohio eighteen years ago\, the site of their home was a builder’s lot with a tree\, a couple of bushes and turf. Over the years it has evolved into a beautiful garden with a unique mix of ornamental trees\, shrubs and perennials. With the influence of many trips to England’s lovely gardens and garden books\, the owners have transitioned their yard into an inviting experience. The mature specimens include tanyosho pine\, harlequin glorybower\, witch hazel\, silk tassel bush and bishop’s cap. Standing under the blended foliage\, the understory plantings of salvias and penstemon combined with Japanese maples provides a private surrounding for their home. \nRecycled Treasures\n* * * * *\nMixing a flat\, grassy backyard with ingenuity\, a flair for “rustic country” and a passion for plants\, Cherie Higbee fashions an intriguing garden design with botanical and recycled treasures. From conifers to sedums and Japanese maples embellishing the collection\, variety and abundance abounds. Creativity mingles with serendipity\, whimsy\, and the patina of well-loved objects to transform her garden beds into vignettes with a potting shed\, playhouse\, green-roofed outhouse\, Texaco station and so much more. It’s a visual feast and a one of-a-kind Higbee original. A crowd favorite from the 2017 Petals and Pathways Tour\, this garden has matured\nand has new plantings and surprises. \nHaving it all in a Small Space\n* * * * *\nForm and function describe the transformation of this small lot. What began surrounded by grass and weeds has been developed into a high-yield\, small orchard space. Compact areas featuring shrubs\, perennials and front yard green space provide splashes of color drawing attention to the home. The backyard garden is host to raised vegetable beds\, cane berry plants\, an herb garden and colorful planters surrounding the patio. Near the functional greenhouse is an area that underwent rehabilitation using the “lasagna approach” and provides for favorable bird watching – a tranquil distraction from the busy street outside of the fence. Look for the newly planted\, septic-safe groundcover. This lovely small space is always a work in progress. \nMaestros Montagna Viste\n(Italian for “Majestic Mountain Views)\n* * * * *\nThis property is a 2.5-acre contemporary homestead retreat which began as undeveloped land purchased in 2004 when Douglas-fir and hemlocks were planted along the west for privacy. A ditch\, pump\, and well were then added for irrigation. Truckloads of manure from a local dairy farm and sawdust from a mill were brought in to amend the soil. Construction for the small modern country home began in 2005 with the addition of several outbuildings over the past 17 years\, including a studio\, potting shed and pump house. These structures are connected by stone pathways and mixed borders of native plants such as salal and vine maple. The individual charm of each building\, along with the clever landscaping\, masks their functionality. Throughout the property are various seating areas and patios\, framed by sculped metal gates\, as well as a boulder fire pit sprinkled with succulents. Mature specimen trees punctuate out of the spacious lawn and are defined by concrete block edging. Other plants to enjoy are the green fig\, Pacific crabapple\, peonies\, quince and a grove of sycamore that shade the studio. Nearby\, notice the sculpture that adorns the north entrance.

SUMMARY:Digging Deeper Webinar: Getting the Garden Going
DESCRIPTION:Come learn how to get your garden growing!\nAlthough the north Olympic Peninsula enjoys relatively mild winters\, our long cool springs\, moderate summers\, and early arrival of cooler fall temperatures make vegetable gardening a challenge for some. With a few tricks\, however\, local home gardeners can have a bountiful vegetable harvest. \nHere’s a direct link to the Zoom presentation. \nOn Saturday\, March 19\, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon\, Clallam County Master Gardeners Audreen Williams\, Cindy Ericksen\, and Bob Cain will teach local gardeners how to grow vegetables successfully on the North Olympic Peninsula. They will discuss how the local climate affects crop selection and gardening practices. They will outline where and when to plant a vegetable garden and how to provide optimal care. They will describe starting seeds indoors and the risks and benefits of doing so. They will outline what you can do to harvest vegetables from your garden in all four seasons. \nAudreen Williams has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2012. Her favorite Master Gardener activities occur at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles where she oversees the Master Gardener plots and blueberry patch\, assists the 4-H Garden Club\, and coordinates the Second Saturday Garden Walks. Audreen was the 2014 and 2019 Master Gardener of the Year. She has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. \nA nurse by profession\, Cindy Ericksen has years of gardening experience. Since becoming a Master Gardener in 2006\, she has grown and contributed thousands of healthy starts to the spring Master Gardener plant sale. She has been an avid supporter of the Master Gardener Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) in which Master Gardeners visit second grade classes throughout Clallam County to teach students about plants. Cindy has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. \nBob Cain has more than 40 years of gardening experience in Scotland\, Ireland\, Colorado\, and Washington. He joined Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2009 and is a frequent contributor to local newspaper gardening columns and radio programs. He was the Manager of the Woodcock Demonstration Garden for 7 years and has helped to raise thousands of pounds of produce for the Sequim Food Bank. Bob was the 2009 Master Gardener Intern of the Year\, 2011 Master Gardener of the Year\, and has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. \nDigging Deeper presentations are held on the first and third Saturdays of most months and cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners. Presentations are free and open to the public and are scheduled for 90-minutes to allow for demonstrations (or videos) and questions from viewers.
