DESCRIPTION:Join WSU Regional Small Farms for our next online virtual educational offering all about Chickens! \nAcross Kitsap\, Jefferson and Clallam counties\, ranging from residents with small backyards to those managing large acreage\, raise chickens. This class is for those new to caring for poultry and for those who would like a refresher. The focus will be on how to start a flock\, how to keep your chickens healthy\, common mistakes and misconceptions in poultry care\, and connecting folks with resources to further build their knowledge. \nThis class is open to farmers and homesteaders across the region and further afield. It’s for both homesteaders and small farmers new to chickens. The class is also suitable for those seeking ways to better care for an already established flock. SUMMARY:Dirt Talk Farm Walk: Meat Goat Production and Pasture Management at Bowman Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join farmer Mark Bowman of Bowman Farms in Port Angeles for an on-farm tour on September 21st from 3-5pm. Mark will be sharing his expertise about all things meat goat production with a focus on breeding and pasture management. Dirt Talk Farm Walks provide farmer-to-farmer education to promote the exchange of ideas and innovations related to sustainable and organic farming in our region. \nThis farm walk is open to all beginning and current farmers\, not to the general public.    \nTopics to be discussed during the Farm Walk:  \n\nPasture-raised meat goat operation without using grain with a focus on pasture and grazing management on poor sandy soils using compost and other methods \nGoat breeds – a successful breeding program that showcases how to match breeding and birthing to maximize grazing and grass production to reduce hay costs. Mark will touch upon meat processing\, too.  \nNew WSU AgWeatherNet weather station\n\n\nPlease only register for the farm walk if you plan to attend as there is limited space for this event.
