SUMMARY:The History of Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s mixed in your favorite coffee drink\, on your ice cream sundae or straight out of the wrapper\, just about everyone enjoys the smooth\, creamy taste of chocolate. But the confection we know and love has had a long\, interesting and delicious evolution. \nFind out how this ground and roasted “food of the gods” worked its way into our hearts\, minds and stomachs! \nJoin Clallam County Master Gardener Margery Whites \nfor the Green Thumb Education Series presentation \n“The History of Chocolate\,” \nThursday\, November 13th \nfrom 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. \nat St. Andrews Episcopal Church – 510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles. \nThe Green Thumb Series is no longer being live streamed through Zoom. \nCome join us in-person. \nOur love affair with chocolate stretches back thousands of years to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. Long before it became the sweet confection we know and adore\, chocolate went through many changes and iterations. This presentation will cover the origins of cacao versus where cacao is cultivated today\, various cacao species\, the mysteries of cacao pollination\, cacao cultivation and harvesting\, cacao usage by indigenous cultures of the Americas\, how the Europeans influenced cacao usage\, and climate change challenges. \n“After my coffee presentation in 2023\, Muriel Nesbitt asked me to do a companion presentation on chocolate. Thus\, this presentation will be dedicated to Muriel\,” Margery said. \nMargery has been a Master Gardener since 2016. She’s traveled extensively in Central America\, one of the cacao-producing regions of the world. It is where she first tasted chocolate that was not refined in the European fashion the way that she was used to. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held in person typically on Thursdays from January through May\, and September through November. WSU Extension programs are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of noncompliance may be reported through your local Extension office or to the WSU Compliance and Civil Rights office https://ccr.wsu.edu Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities and special needs who contact the office at 360-417-2279.

SUMMARY:Preserving the Harvest
DESCRIPTION:“Preserving the Harvest\,” \nwith WSU Extension Program Coordinator \nDanielle Carson \nThursday\, September 25th\, 2025 \nPreserving food grown at home\, in season\, has long been a practice of food security and community. As gardeners\, farmers and homesteaders\, the abundance we harvest in the summer can last us through the winter months if we have the skills\, materials and space for preserving food. \nJoin WSU Extension Program Coordinator Danielle Carson \nfor the Green Thumb Education Series presentation: \n“Preserving the Harvest” \nThursday\, September 25th \nfrom 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nat St. Andrews Episcopal Church \n510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles \nand find out how to make your harvest last all year long. \nAll gardeners and locavores know the overwhelming feeling in September when our gardens\, fruit trees and neighborhoods are lush with fruits and vegetables. This class is an overview of the many methods and resources that we can use\, from high-tech to low-tech (even no-tech!) to preserve the fruits of our labor! Participants will leave the class equipped with knowledge about food safety and a set of guidelines for extending nearly any fresh food item’s life span from fall through to the next harvest season. In a jam-packed two hours\, Danielle will give an overview of the history of food preservation\, food safety considerations for the gardener-turned-food preserver and preservation methods\, including fermentation\, canning\, dehydration\, pickling and more. \nDanielle is the Community Health Program Coordinator and Food Preservation Advisor for WSU Extension Clallam County\, as well as a hobby food preservationist. As a local sauerkraut maker\, she specializes in wild fermentation\, but advises the community on canning\, dehydration\, pickling\, and other types of food preservation. She has been growing and preserving food for a decade\, five seasons of which she has lived and farmed on the Olympic Peninsula. Danielle found her way into food preservation like many of us did: through a love for gardening and an appreciation for the seasonal abundances that Olympic Peninsula gardens\, farms and nature have to offer. She is currently experimenting with beer\, wine and mead-making in addition to making large batches of pickles and sauerkraut to share with our community. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held in person on the second Thursday of each month from January through May\, and September through November (unless otherwise noted). Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/ for the latest information on upcoming presentations. DESCRIPTION:Join Master Gardener\, Ed Adams\, \non Thursday September 11th at 10:00 am \nfor the September 2025 Woodcock Walkabout. \nWoodcock Demonstration Gardens is exploding with vibrant color.  The dahlias are fabulous this year. Many thanks to Master Gardener\, Ed Adams. who has worked hard on his passion for this favorite flower. The Dahlias will be the major attraction on the tour.  Ed will guide you through 22 plus themed gardens where other Master Gardeners are busy as bees working the gardens to promote community enjoyment and education. \nPack your lunch\, put on your sun hat and come take a free educational stroll. Meet in the covered pavilion where you will be given a walking tour guide and the 2025 Event Schedule. Master Gardener Ed Adams will meet you there for the start of the tour. \nThis month’s walk will focus on the dahlia garden but will include all the gardens such as the small fruits\, which are ready for harvest\, water conservation and of course\, the visitors’ interests. The shade garden is a nice cool place to stroll.  The herbs in the culinary and medicinal beds are ready for the kitchen table. The fragrance of herbs and flowers fill the air.  The mushroom garden has fruiting bodies ready for production. The vegetable raised beds are supplying our local food bank and educational “Digging Deeper Saturday” classes have been taking place in the pavilion. \nAfter the tour\, you will be free to stroll around the gardens and speak with the Master Gardeners or relax with your picnic lunch at the picnic tables. \nThe Woodcock Demonstration Garden is a beautiful 2.74-acre site that has been in operation since 1987 and is open to the public for educational purposes.
