SUMMARY:Ciscoe Morris at Port Angeles Library
DESCRIPTION:Reinvigorate your garden and refresh your planting strategies this spring with environmentally-friendly gardening guru Ciscoe Morris. New Ideas in Gardening will take place at 6:30pm on Saturday\, April 2\, at the Port Angeles Main Library. This free after-hours program will highlight new ideas and old wisdom for keeping your plants healthy and attractive. Morris will discuss which perennials to cut back and divide\, methods for pest control\, pruning strategies\, when and how to fertilize plants\, and much more. See which garden tools Morris relies on and try to win one of several door prizes by answering one of his tough “Ciscoe stumpers” (he only allows two attempts at true-or-false questions). \n  \nMorris will also be on-hand at the conclusion of his talk to answer gardening questions and sign copies of his book\, Ask Ciscoe\, Oh\, la\, la! Your Gardening Questions Answered. Books will be available for purchase beginning at 6pm\, courtesy of Odyssey Bookshop.

SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Where Are All The Weeds?
DESCRIPTION:Spring may be many weeks away\, but there lurks a force to be reckoned with in the garden as soon as the days grow longer—weeds. Join David Whiting for the Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation “Where Are All The Weeds?” and discover where weeds are now and what you can do to keep them at bay when they finally arrive. \nThe Green Thumb Garden Tips presentation “Where Are All The Weeds?” will be held in person on: \nThursday\, January 26th from Noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Main Library’s Carver Room at 2210 S. Peabody Street in Port Angeles. \nWe will also be broadcasting the presentation via Zoom. \nFind a direct link to the presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782  \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830  \nPasscode: 676224  \nSome gardeners spend little time weeding with few weeds in their landscapes and gardens. Others spend hours and hours only to have their gardens covered with weeds. Why? David’s class on the science of weeds looks at causes of weed problems and various management techniques to hinder their spread. \nDavid will take the audience through different scenarios on weed prevention\, as management depends on the specific weeds and the gardening conditions. “This class gives a variety of weed management techniques that the individual gardener can incorporate\, depending on their specific situation\,” he said.  \nDavid Whiting is an avid gardener and retired Professor and Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Colorado State University. David has spent most of his professional career at the county or state level leading Master Gardener Programs.  \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar for the latest information on upcoming presentations. For questions\, call 360-565-2678.

SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Pollinator Plantings: Perfecting the Process
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are interested in adding some native plants to your landscape\, creating a wildflower meadow\, planting for beneficial insects in your vegetable garden\, or designing a few pots for pollinators\, pro-pollinator information is exploding. Join Jefferson County Master Gardener Nita Wester for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Pollinator Plantings: Perfecting the Process” and find out how you can help lead the way in reversing the devastating decline in pollinator populations. \n“Pollinator Plantings: Perfecting the Process” \nwill be held in-person on Thursday\, April 27th from noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles \nYou may also join us online… \nClick here for a direct link to the Zoom presentation \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830 \nPasscode: 676224 \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \n“By creating simple plantings that reflect the right plants in the right place\, we can inspire others to convert another chunk of ground into an asset for our planet\,” Nita said. \nAccess an extensive list of resources and inspiration that Nita has discovered while converting more and more of the suburban lot surrounding her house into better pollinator habitat. Researchers have documented that a succession of simple changes can lead to big results; ecological understanding serves us all\, and plantings that benefit pollinators can be beautiful and a source of pride. Nita will discuss the steps in the process—planting plans\, choosing the right plants\, prepping the soil\, seeding or transplanting\, maintenance and planting at the right pace for you so you can take pride in the pollinator gardens you’ve created. \nNita was born into a vegetable gardening family and gardened successfully in the Willamette Valley in Oregon and Northern Minnesota but found initially that gardening in this area was more challenging. Nita taught in a public school alternative program and taught a K-8 gardening class that was one of the program offerings. When she retired after 30 years\, Nita became a Jefferson County Master Gardener (class of 2013) and has been one of the instructors for the local Growing Groceries class for the past nine years. Year-round gardening\, managing worm bins\, supporting beneficial insects and native pollinators are her gardening priorities. She continues to value the great gardeners she meets and the life-long learning opportunity that gardening provides. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. In November\, December\, and January\, one lecture is offered. Scheduled presentations are subject to change. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Poisonous Plants of the Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:A tansy ragwort infestation.\nThe Olympic Peninsula hosts a diverse number of plants\, including many edible plants. But unfortunately\, poisonous plants\, both native and introduced\, also grow on the Peninsula. These poisonous plants run the spectrum from causing skin rashes when touched all the way up to potentially killing humans and pets if consumed. But with a little bit of knowledge and a good eye\, you can identify these plants and protect yourself\, your family\, friends and pets from their harmful effects. Join Christina St John for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Poisonous Plants of the Olympic Peninsula” on May 25th. \nJoin the Zoom Presentation Via This Link \nLearn common poisonous plants found on the Olympic Peninsula\, how to identify them and hear tips on how to safely remove them from your landscape if necessary. We will also compare them with non-poisonous plants that look similar. There will be samples available to look at for some of these poisonous plants. \nChristina is the coordinator for the Clallam County Noxious Weed Control Program\, which works with private and public landowners to ensure the control of noxious weeds within the county and is responsible for treating noxious weeds on county-owned land. Previously she worked at Shore Road Nursery and the Matt Albright Native Plant Center growing native plants of the Olympic Peninsula. She has also worked on restoration projects in California and North Carolina. Christina obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from UC Santa Cruz and her Master’s in Sustainable Forest Management at Oregon State University. \nThe rosette of Poison Hemlock.\nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Poisonous Plants of the Olympic Peninsula” \nwill be held in person on Thursday\, May 25th \nfrom Noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room \n2210 S. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Growing Food in a Greenhouse
DESCRIPTION:Find out how you can grow more food in your greenhouse year-round.\nThe climate on the north Olympic Peninsula has many advantages\, but it makes growing some vegetable varieties difficult. Having a greenhouse can open up a world of possibilities to you beyond growing tomatoes or peppers. Join Clallam County Master Gardeners Betsy Burlingame and David Ramblin for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Growing Food in a Greenhouse” and find out how to extend your growing season\, both spring and fall\, and enjoy more home-grown food. \nFind a direct link to the presentation here. \n“We are able to grow tomatoes\, bell peppers\, hot peppers\, okra\, basil\, and other vegetable starts. We also were able to get a great start on getting our flowers ready to be placed outside when the weather permitted\,” David said. \nWhether you have a hoop-house\, a cold frame or an elaborate one made of glass or plastic\, a greenhouse can be used to grow your own food during the colder months. According to Washington State University\, in addition to growing greens like spinach and lettuce\, you can also grow cold-tolerant veggies such as cabbage and broccoli in a green house. \n“We have been growing food in our greenhouses since 2006. Every day and every season is different\, depending on the weather and what we decide to grow in the greenhouse. Tomatoes\, peppers\, herbs and propagating some flowering plants\,” Betsy said. \nGreenhouses also allow gardeners to grow food regardless of the weather\, while also adding additional growing area vertically if more garden space is needed. \nBetsy spent her early gardening years in Eastern Washington where everything grows well. When she moved to Sequim 26 years ago\, she “failed miserably at growing anything in our maritime climate.” Betsy built her first greenhouse to overwinter a lemon tree in 2006 after visiting several “lemon houses” in Italy. \nHaving a greenhouse can open up a world of possibilities to you by growing vegetables in the colder seasons.\n“Growing\, harvesting and preserving our own food is a shared passion with my husband. I’m particularly interested in finding new and different ways of using what we grow.” Betsy has been a Master Gardener since 2011\, holds two degrees from Washington State University\, and plans to be a lifelong student. \nDavid grew up in Northern Louisiana where the growing season is much longer. “We planted a garden from late March to early May depending on the weather. Usually in late May or June you would be eating some of the vegetables we planted\,” he said. After college\, David joined the U.S. Air Force and traveled the world. He met his wife in Oregon\, and they have been married for 45 years. David became a Master Gardener in 2012 and has held several positions in the organization including President and Vice-President. He’s been involved with Master Gardener events and enjoys working with the other Master Gardeners. \n  \nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Growing Food in a Greenhouse” will be held: \nIn person on Thursday\, June 8th from noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Wasps\, Hornets and Their Mimics
DESCRIPTION:Bees are beneficial\, but what about their buzzy bros\, wasps and hornets? – Photo by Flo on Unsplash.com\nWe’ve heard about the wonderful and incredibly important benefits that bees provide as pollinators\, but what about their buzzy counterparts\, wasps and hornets? Join WSU Clallam County Extension Regional Horticulture Specialist Laurel Moulton for the \nGreen Thumb Education Series presentation \n“Wasps\, Hornets and Their Mimics” \nto help dispel the negative notions surrounding these valuable creatures. \nFind a direct link to the live presentation here. \nLaurel will introduce the common species of wasps found in our area including paper wasps\, yellowjackets\, bald-faced hornets and others. She will touch briefly on invasive hornets that have not been found in our area\, including the northern giant hornet and European hornet and share some interesting native wasps\, like horntails and others that gardeners may occasionally run into. Laurel will cover the beneficial services that hornets provide and how to manage wasp nests and colonies that become nuisances. \n“I hope that gardeners come away with less fear of wasps and an appreciation of how they contribute to the ecosystem and provide benefit to humans. I grew up loving insects of all sorts and I enjoy sharing that love with others\, in hopes that others will look at wasps with wonder and appreciation instead of fear\,” Laurel said. \nLaurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and received her master’s degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University in 2011. She is currently a member of the WSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Team and spends her time outside of Master Gardeners helping small farms in Clallam\, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties to accurately identify pests and crop diseases while developing plans to manage them sustainably. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for insects and growing food with the community. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation \n“Wasps\, Hornets and Their Mimics” \nwill be held in person on \nThursday\, June 22nd from noon – 1:00 p.m. \nat the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Farewell to Summer: Autumn Leaves
DESCRIPTION:Summer flowers on the Olympic Peninsula are fading as the days cool and become shorter. Don’t despair—a new burst of color in your gar-den is right around the corner! Join Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Farewell to Summer: Autumn Leaves” and say hello to fabulous fall foliage. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Farewell to Summer: Autumn Leaves” will be held in person on Thursday\,  September 14th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles and will be broadcast live via Zoom. \nFind a direct link to the live presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830 \nPasscode: 676224 \nJeanette will discuss why deciduous trees and shrubs lose their leaves in the fall and change color. She will explain the chemistry behind leaf color\, why fall colors are brighter some years compared to others\, and why the leaves of some plants turn brown while those of others turn eye-catching shades of yellow\, orange\, and red. Jeanette will suggest ways local gardeners can bring fall color into their landscape and how to use fallen leaves to benefit the garden by protecting plants and soil instead of bagging them for trash pickup. \nJeanette’s love of fall led her to research the science behind leaf color change and share that information with others. “After hearing this presentation\, local gardeners will be able to select trees and shrubs that can brighten the fall landscape\,” she said. Jeanette will also talk about the skills needed to recognize leaf color change of concern; color changes that are due to inappropriate care or disease and not the changing season. \nJeanette and her husband Paul love the color changes that occur across the North Olympic Peninsula in autumn. They enjoy hiking in Olympic National Park during the fall to witness the splashes of color from vine and big leaf maples\, huckleberry and other native plants. Jeanette has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003. She writes gardening articles for local newspapers and participates in gardening programs on local radio stations. Jeanette loves teaching and is a frequent speaker at Master Gardener and other educational events. Jeanette was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year and has attained the Life-time Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. Iris will delve into the various forms of plant propagation to help you multiply your plants with the techniques\, tricks and hard-won experience she’s developed over years of trial and error. \nIris began her gardening career about the same time she was learning how to walk. Her mother Terri taught her how to collect and identify seeds\, then made a game of memorizing which seeds would grow into what plants\, how deep to plant them\, when to plant them\, and what kind of light was needed for each. These early childhood games deeply imbued a love of nature and plant lore that would last a lifetime. Now\, 40 years later\, Iris owns Earth Grown Creations\, a nursery in Port Orchard with over 20\,000 plants\, specializing in perennial flowers\, shrubs\, trees and herbs. Iris proudly grows and propagates all 1400 varieties of her own nursery stock. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Propagation of Hardy Ferns
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, ferns have been gracing our planet with their wispy\, feathery leaves\, providing beauty and grace in forests\, fields\, jungles and gardens. With over 10\,500 fern varieties\, they never cease to beautify our surroundings. Learn more about how you can grow and reproduce these green\, frond-y gems and join \nWSU Clallam County Master Gardener\, Sara Farinelli. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Propagating Ferns” will be held in person and via Zoom on Thursday\, October 26th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles. \nFind a direct link to the live presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830 \nPasscode: 676224 \nFerns provide a pop of color to interior spaces\, add texture and interest to landscapes and many are perfect for a too-shady spot in your garden. Sara will give a brief introduction to ferns and the various ways they reproduce\, with a focus on propagation by spores. “(People) who enjoy growing ornamental and vegetable garden plants from seeds will find this to be another way to satisfy the urge to produce their own garden plants\,” Sara said. \nSeveral years ago\, Sara took a fern propagation class offered at Kruckeberg Botanical Garden in Shoreline\, WA. “The relative ease of getting the spore to grow and produce a fern came as a surprise and inspired (me) to find out more about this lovely\, diverse plant\,” she added. Sara has been growing plant starts for the Master Gardener demonstration plots at the 5th Street Community Gardens for the past five years. For her own yard\, she also enjoys growing annuals and herbaceous perennials\, shrubs and trees from seed\, layering\, bare root and cuttings. Some of her “fern babies” have been sold at the Master Gardener Annual Plant Sale. \nSara has been a Master Gardener since 2016 and has coordinated the creation of the yearly Master Gardener Calendar (2024 now available for purchase here) since 2020. She spends hours in her yard dreaming of the beautiful woodland garden it will someday become. \nThe “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” education series\, sponsored by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners\, is held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month through October. SUMMARY:Green Thumb - Growing Sweet Potatoes
DESCRIPTION:Diced\, sliced\, baked\, sautéed or mixed in pies; sweet potatoes are a family favorite packed with flavor and vitamins. But growing them on the Olympic Peninsula has been traditionally difficult. Now\, with new cultivars more suited to our maritime climate\, it is possible to grow these tasty tubers west of the Cascades! Learn how by joining Washington State University Clallam County Extension Regional Horticulture Specialist Laurel Moulton for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Growing Sweet Potatoes.” Gardeners will learn the basics of growing sweet potatoes\, from propagation through curing and storage. \nThe Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Growing Sweet Potatoes” will be held in person on Thursday\,  December 14th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library’s Carver Room\, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles and will be broadcast live via Zoom. \nFind a direct link to the live presentation here. \nOr join by phone: 253-215-8782 \nMeeting ID: 936 2989 8830 \nPasscode: 676224 \nSweet potatoes are usually grown in warmer places\, such as the southeastern U.S. and southern California\, but it is possible to achieve a good yield in our area with a little effort. “The longer day length of northern latitude helps make up for the cooler growing season\, but growers still need to plan their garden well to be successful\,” Laurel said. \nLaurel has been partnering with researchers at the WSU Northwest Research and Extension Center in Mount Vernon to conduct sweet potato growing trials in our area for the last two years. “The trials are looking for wireworm resistant sweet potatoes that grow well in our area\, since wireworms are a primary pest that has few organic management methods\,” she said. Trials are also examining plant spacing\, the effect of harvesting greens on root yield\, and which existing commercial cultivars are most successful for farms in our area. \nLaurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006\, and coordinator of the Clallam County Program for six years\, between 2013 and 2014\, and then from 2019 to the present. She also enjoys interacting with farmers in Clallam\, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties as a specialist in Integrated Pest Management. She holds a master’s degree in horticulture systems with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University.
