Forests are an integral part of our ecosystem in Western Washington, fostering trees and plants that filter air and water, as well as offering habitat for critical species that are vital to the well-being of our area. What factors can put our forests at risk? Join Washington Department of Natural Resources forest pathologist Rachel Brooks for a Green Thumb Education Series presentation and find out what is impacting the health of our forests.<\/p>\n

The Green Thumb Education Series presentation \u201cA Review of Western Forest Health\u201d will be held in person on Thursday, November 9th<\/sup> from noon \u2013 1:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library\u2019s Carver Room, 2210 S. Peabody St. in Port Angeles and livestreamed via Zoom.<\/p>\n

\"\"Rachel will discuss how tree diseases, insects and weather stress factors like drought can impact forest strength. \u201cKnowledge of what is happening in your forest can help you better understand your options and make appropriate management decisions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Rachel is a forest pathologist at the Washington Department of Natural Resources where she provides technical assistance to landowners, helps monitor the state for tree diseases and pests, conducts research, and assists with educational events. Rachel obtained her PhD in Plant Pathology from Virginia Tech where she studied biological control options for an invasive tree (Ailanthus altissima<\/em>) and taught forest pathology.<\/p>\n

The \u201cGreen Thumbs Garden Tips\u201d education series, sponsored by the W<\/span>ashington\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>tate\u00a0<\/span>U<\/span>niversity<\/span>\u00a0Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>each month through October. In November, December, and January, one lecture is offered. Scheduled\u00a0<\/span>presentations are subject to change.
