Did you know Clark County requires you to have your conventional gravity-fed septic system inspected every 3 years? Attending this Well and Septic Workshop will allow you to inspect the system yourself every-other time\, instead of hiring a professional to do it for you. This can save you money. Having your septic system inspected by a professional often costs more than $100. You can save money by getting certified to self-inspect your system in our class which costs $17.85\, saving homeowners money. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Biochar Burn Demonstration and Small Acreage Woodland Tour!\nSaturday\, June 29th 8:00am-3:00pm at a small acreage residence in Ridgefield\, WA.\nCome take part in the biochar burn with a Ring of Fire Biochar Kiln\, which is ideal for making biochar on your own small acreage with small diameter wood from your own woodland. Biochar is a type of charcoal that is burned at a specific temperature range and with limited oxygen. Biochar has many benefits as a soil amendment\, including: retaining moisture; sequestering carbon; and when combined with nutrients\, such as compost\, it can offer long-term soil fertility improvements. The biochar burn setup will begin promptly at 8am. When the burn is finished (likely between 11am-2pm) we will begin an hour-long tour of the woodland and learn about best management practices for watershed and small acreage woodland health. DESCRIPTION:Living on the Land – Class Series Teaches Land Stewardship    \n Clark County\, WA – Over the past 21 years\, over 500 Clark County residents have graduated from the Living on the Land class series. The program brings in local experts to teach key stewardship principles to small acreage land caretakers.  These experts give advice on pasture and livestock management\, managing weeds\, caring for your forest\, improving wildlife habitat\, soil health\, stormwater management\, well & septic maintenance\, and more.    \n The first step to good land management is understanding the whole system. This class series begins with advice on how to take appropriate inventories and create maps that help with goal planning.  The class then dives into pasture and teaches about rotational grazing. Soil speakers share advice on soil testing and improving your soil health and fertility.  The watershed class teaches about dealing with stormwater and protecting nearby water bodies. Terry Koper\, Small Acreage Program Coordinator\, states\, “The variety of information these classes cover can help small acreage land caretakers dealing with a variety of land management issues.  Not only do we teach stewardship practices\, but also how to effectively manage your problem areas such as muddy pastures and weeds.”  \n The program is hosted by WSU Clark County Extension – Small Acreage Program and supported by Clark County Public Works Clean Water. This class-series is on Tuesday evenings from October 1 through December 3\, 2024\, with an optional field trip on Saturday\, September 28th.  Classes will be in-person. DESCRIPTION:WSU Extension Hosts – Small Acreage Expo    \nSaturday\, May 17th\, 2025 – 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM \n78th St. Heritage Farm\, 1919 NE 78th Street\, Vancouver\, WA 98665  \nClark County\, WA –    WSU Clark County Extension – Small Acreage Program invites the community to the Small Acreage Expo on Saturday\, May 17th at the 78th Street Heritage Farm\, 1919 E 78th St. Vancouver\, WA 98665. \nThis year’s Small Acreage Expo offers a variety of topics including workshops on wildfire preparedness\, rainwater harvesting\, mud and manure management\, PNW traditional first foods\, grazing field demonstration\, septic system maintenance and financial\, protecting soil and water\, no-till drill seeding demonstration\, meadowscaping\, and more. Throughout the day\, participants can peruse educational booths to learn more about local organizations and agencies serving the small acreage community. \nAccording to Terry Koper\, Small Acreage Program Coordinator\, “Each year our small acreage community comes together at the Expo to meet one another and learn valuable tips about land and water stewardship. It’s a great opportunity to discover local resources and learn new practices to improve your land\, which can save people money and help protect the land and water we depend upon.” \nEarly bird registration by May 3rd is $20 and includes lunch\, or $12 without lunch. Then through noon May 16th registration is $25 (lunch included)/$15 (no lunch). Walk-ins are $25 (lunch not included). Scholarships are available. Did you know Clark County requires you to have your conventional gravity-fed septic system inspected every 3 years? Attending this Well and Septic Workshop will allow you to inspect the system yourself every other time\, instead of hiring a professional to do it for you. This can save you money. Having your septic system inspected by a professional often costs more than $100. You can save money by getting certified to self-inspect your system in our class which costs $18.00\, saving homeowners money. Completing the workshop and a short exam will certify participants to self-inspect their own septic system every–other-time. \nThe workshop is taught by Clark County Public Health and will teach participants how to maintain and inspect their septic systems and safely maintain their well water. “Getting self-inspection certified is also a good long-term investment and participants will learn how to spot problems faster so they can have them fixed rather than looking at a costly system replacement”\, says Terry Koper\, Small Acreage Program Coordinator. \nThis workshop is hosted by the Small Acreage Program of Washington State University Clark County Extension with support from Clark County Public Works Clean Water.
