This resource is for people canning for the first time or for experienced canners wanting to improve their canning practices.<\/p>\n<p>The free, 196-page\u00a0 publication can be downloaded from the <a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uga.edu\/nchfp\/publications\/publications_usda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">National Center for Home Food Preservation website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nchfp.uga.edu\/publications\/usda\/GUIDE01_HomeCan_rev0715.pdf\">The first section<\/a> explains the scientific principles on which canning techniques are based, discusses canning equipment, and describes the proper use of jars and lids. This app lets set you set your jar size, pack type, canning method, and elevation. It also reminds you of the steps necessary to prepare jars and canning pots. These external sites do not implicitly or explicitly represent official positions and policies of WSU Extension.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cpb-column  two\" style=\"\"><div class=\"cpb-textblock cpb-item \"><p><\/p>\n<h3>Pressure Gauge Testing<\/h3>\n<p>We are not currently testing dial pressure gauges for canners.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of options available to you:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Free, drop-in testing<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nBob&#8217;s in Longview does pressure gauge testing for free in their housewares section on a drop-in basis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bobsmerch.com\/housewares-department\/\">Bob\u2019s Sporting Goods<\/a><br \/>\n1111 Hudson St<br \/>\nLongview, WA 98632<br \/>\n360-425-3870<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>All-American Canners<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you have All American with both weighted and dial gauge the company recommends only the weighted gauge used for canning and not the dial gauge.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Presto Free Testing<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Presto will test their own gauges for free.\u00a0 You will need to check with them about testing National, Magic Seal, Maid of Honor, Kook-Kwick<\/p>\n<p>Send the Presto gauges to:<\/p>\n<p>National Presto Industries Inc<br \/>\nAttn. gauge testing<br \/>\n3925 N Hastings Way<br \/>\nEau Claire, WI 54703<\/p>\n<p>Please allow 2-3 weeks to get the gauge back. Please include complete information in the box, meaning name, address (no PO box) and phone number. You\u2019re welcome to ship any way you prefer, but they do recommend a tracking number of some sort for your and their protection against damage or lost packages.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Switch to a Weighted Gauge<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Presto can also help with switching your canner to a 3-piece weighted gauge.<\/p>\n<p>If you switch to a weighted gauge you don\u2019t need to get your gauge checked. The weight becomes all that you need to rely on. You leave the dial gauge on \u2014 but it becomes instead just an indicator to let you know when the pressure is returning close to 0 so you will be able to take the lid off.<\/p>\n<p>Do call Presto so they can help you determine if this is the best approach for you.
