It is\u00a0native\u00a0to western\u00a0North America\u00a0and is known as\u00a0Douglas-fir,\u00a0Oregon pine,\u00a0and\u00a0Columbian pine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The common name honors\u00a0David Douglas, a Scottish botanist and collector who first reported the extraordinary nature and potential of the species. The common name is misleading since it is not a true fir, i.e., not a member of the genus\u00a0<i>Abies<\/i>. For this reason the name is often written as\u00a0Douglas-fir\u00a0(a name also used for the genus\u00a0<i>Pseudotsuga<\/i>\u00a0as a whole).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-orstate-9\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The specific epithet\u00a0<i>menziesii<\/i>\u00a0is after\u00a0Archibald Menzies, a Scottish physician and rival\u00a0naturalist\u00a0to\u00a0David Douglas. Menzies first documented the tree on\u00a0Vancouver Island\u00a0in 1791. Colloquially, the species is also known simply as\u00a0Doug fir<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-wilson2008-6\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Douglas pine<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-wilson2008-6\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(although the latter common name may also refer to\u00a0<i>Pinus douglasiana<\/i>).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-iucnpindoug-10\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Other names for this tree have included\u00a0Oregon pine,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-calflorassp-5\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0British Columbian pine,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-wilson2008-6\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Puget Sound pine,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-wilson2008-6\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Douglas spruce,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-wilson2008-6\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0false hemlock,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-calflorassp-5\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0red fir,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-calflorassp-5\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0red pine<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-calflorassp-5\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(although again the latter may refer to a different tree species\u2014<i>Pinus resinosa<\/i>).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-usdapire-11\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Douglas-firs are medium-size to extremely large evergreen trees, 70\u2013330 ft tall (although only coast Douglas-firs reach such great heights).<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Douglas_fir#cite_note-13\"><span class=\"s2\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/span><\/a>\u00a0The\u00a0leaves\u00a0are flat, soft, linear, <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2044<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sub>4<\/sub><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u20131 <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2044<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sub>2<\/sub><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0in long, generally resembling those of the firs, occurring singly rather than in\u00a0fascicles; they completely encircle the branches, which can be useful in recognizing the species. As the trees grow taller in denser forest, they lose their lower branches, such that the foliage may start high off the ground. Douglas-firs in environments with more light may have branches much closer to the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The female\u00a0cones\u00a0are pendulous, with persistent scales, unlike those of true firs. They are distinctive in having a long tridentine (three-pointed)\u00a0bract\u00a0that protrudes prominently above each scale (it resembles the back half of a mouse, with two feet and a tail).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\"><i>Pseudotsuga menziesii<\/i>\u00a0var.\u00a0<i>menziesii<\/i>, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">the coast Douglas-fir, grows in the coastal regions from west-central\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Columbia\"><span class=\"s4\">British Columbia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0southward to central\u00a0California. In\u00a0Oregon\u00a0and\u00a0Washington, its range is continuous from the eastern edge of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cascade_Range\">Cascades<\/a>\u00a0west to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Coast_Ranges\">Pacific Coast Ranges<\/a>\u00a0and Pacific Ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;color: #800000\"><strong>This Tree&#8217;s History<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">There are a number of historic logging implements in and around the property making us wonder if this was an old logging camp.\u00a0 This raises the question as to why the large trees were not removed from this property. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The stream running through the property is a tributary to Shanghai Creek.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s2\">Locating the exact location of logging camps is difficult but and there is a lot of general information about camps in the PNW and Vancouver area with great photos.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Our pages provide links to external sites for the convenience of users.
