Mostly growing in riparian zones, isolated trees also appear as planted specimens. Cultivated for both lumber and food, black walnut wood is highly prized for its dark-colored, straight grained, true heartwood and is among the most durable hardwoods in the U.S. The nutmeats provide a distinctive natural flavor, desirable taste and crunch as a food ingredient.

Black Walnut is currently under pressure from the thousand cankers disease that is causing decline of walnut trees in some areas. This species is also allelopathic, which means that it releases chemicals from roots and other tissues that harm some other organisms and give the tree a competitive advantage; this can be undesirable as it can harm garden plants and grasses.

History of This Tree

A former orchard, this was one of the original properties in the Seth. N. Secrist claim (ca. 1875) where he raised prunes, the county’s most popular crop. In 1974 the Cassidy family purchased and expanded this home.

For the past 50 years the Cassidy family has lovingly maintained this beautiful Black Walnut situated high on a hill overlooking Vancouver Lake. Because of this tree’s welcoming feel combined with its striking location frequented by bald eagles and pelicans, overall shape, form, appearance and size, Marion Cassidy is determined that this 70+ year old tree will never be removed even if the property is ever sold.

To view this tree contact the property owner since it is not visible from the street.

Members of the Master Gardener Heritage Tree team take measurements of HT14

Our pages provide links to external sites for the convenience of users.
