SUMMARY:Composting 101
DESCRIPTION:Learn to Master Gardening: Composting 101\nFirst in a New “Master Gardening” Series\nCome to the Timberland Library in Hoquiam on Saturday\, March 25 and learn how to begin composting for your garden. In this one-hour class presented by certified WSU Master Gardener Chris Koehler\, you will dig into composting methods so you can make great living compost at home. \nYou will focus on making high-quality compost that you can NOT buy at the nursery. Subjects to be covered include compost types and methods; compost maintenance and testing; and all about the microscopic soil elements that are so vital to successful gardening. Topics for the additional three programs will be announced. \nThe one-hour class begins at 1:00 p.m. The Hoquiam Timberland library is located at 420 7th Street\, in Hoquiam. SUMMARY:Citizen Scientist Bee Pollination Project Training
DESCRIPTION:If you farm or garden small fruits and vegetables and would like to participate in a citizen science program to monitor bees and pollination\, please see the information below. \nAn hour-long training with Eli Bloom is scheduled for Tuesday\, June 6th\, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the WSU Extension office in Elma (32 Elma-McCleary Road/County Fairgrounds). Eli is a PhD candidate in the Department of Entomology at WSU. You must register to attend: https://nwpollinators.org/citizen-science/registration-for-polycultures-and-pollinators/ \nThe research:\nPolycultures and Pollinators: Can boosting crop diversity support pollination by wild bees? \n Diversified farming practices such as inter-cropping and multi-cropping have been shown to increase the diversity of wild bees on farms. However\, little is known about if that increase in wild bee diversity promotes pollination. Polycultures and Pollinators\, a new citizen science study from the Department of Entomology at Washington State University (WSU)\, seeks to examine the role of intentionally increasing crop diversity to boost plant productivity in small-scale farming systems and urban gardens.\n In this citizen science project\, small-scale growers and gardeners are invited to take part in a regional survey of wild bees and pollination. Farmers and gardeners will have the opportunity to attend a 1-hour training session on the methods used for this project\, set out traps once a year and collect a small amount of fruit set data from sentinel plants provided by the project team. If you are interested in this new citizen science project\, you can register at the link given below! \n\n \n \n ↑\n Back to top

SUMMARY:Barley Variety Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Ground to Glass: Evaluation of Barley Varieties for Craft Brewing\, Distilling and Malting\nAn On-Farm Field Day\n  \nEvent Details\nRegistration opens at 4pm prior to the tour. Light refreshments will be served. Dress appropriately for summer heat with hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen. There is no registration fee.\nPlease RSVP to Stephen Bramwell\, Thurston Co. Extension: bramwell@wsu.edu 360.867.2161 \nCome learn about grain production in western Washington\, and varieties being evaluated in a field-scale 4.5-acre replicated trial at Hidden River Farms. Nine varieties/breeding lines are being evaluated for valuable agronomic (yield\, leaf rust) and end-use qualities important for malting\, brewing and distilling. Varieties are also being evaluated for feed quality. Hidden River Farms is an 88-acre organic\, integrated grain-hog operation. Hogs are pasture-raised and fed barley\, wheat and peas grown on site. Grain is raised organically on Nisqually silt-loam soil along the Wynoochee River outside of Montensano\, WA.\nParticipants will learn about:\n Field-scale performance of new barley breeding lines for western Washington\n Farmer experiences growing grain for feed in western Washington\n Barley breeding lines specifically suited to the needs of craft brewers\, micro-maltsters\, and local distillers\n Distiller and brewer perspectives on regional grain production\n Current information on impact of grain variety on spirit flavor attributes\, and how this study is contributing to this research\n Potential for developing locally-distinctive whiskey \nEvan Mulvaney (Hidden River Farms) owns and operates Hidden River Farms. Stephen Bramwell (Ag Extension\, WSU) coordinates field research in Thurston County. Kevin Murphy (Crop & Soil Sciences\, WSU) is the Barley and Alternative Crop Breeder at WSU. Tom Collins (Wine & Distillate Science Specialist\, WSU) is an expert in chemical analyses of the distilling process at the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates\, WSU Richland Wine Science Center. \nExtension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination.
