Caring for and Enhancing Local Parks, by Margie Parker

Margie Parker is President of Friends of Whidbey State Parks, a non-profit organization that works closely with State Park staff to care for seven parks on Whidbey Island. Volunteers and supporters maintain trails and park areas; clean beaches; purchase trail signs; build box steps and tent pads; pull invasive weeds; remove old creosote timbers; plant native plants; and assist with park events such as Outdoor Discovery Day. Join us for this stimulating talk and learn all about the organization, its role in supporting the park environment, and its plans to do more to educate the public about the benefits of native plants, removing invasive plants, and habitat restoration.

Margie is a gardener, hiker, pediatric nurse, ukulele player, sourdough baker, former nursery owner on Whidbey (taught gardening classes for WSU Extension and raised plants for the Coupeville Garden Club), and advocate for native plants, critters, and habitat restoration (worked to save Pacific Rim Institute from development).

WSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of non-compliance may be reported through your local Extension office or to the WSU Center for Human Rights.
