Volunteers are trained to be community educators about issues of importance in their local communities that enhance natural resources, sustain communities, and improve the health and wellness of Washington residents. Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/mastergardener.wsu.edu\/priorities\/2024-impact\/\">impact (PDF)<\/a> made by volunteers around the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Island County, our volunteers reach thousands of residents and visitors to Whidbey and Camano Islands through our various outreach and educational programs and plant clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become a Master Gardener Volunteer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have an interest in gardening and enjoy working in the community to share knowledge with others? <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/island\/gardening\/mg\/become-a-master-gardener\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/island\/gardening\/mg\/become-a-master-gardener\/\">Learn more about becoming an Island County Master Gardener Volunteer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>There are over&nbsp;<strong>80 Certified WSU Extension Master Gardeners<\/strong> active in Island County. As trained, volunteer community educators, these Master Gardeners record thousands of&nbsp;hours of volunteer service and program support. Each Master Gardener also completes at least&nbsp;10 hours in continuing education each year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WSU Extension manages a comprehensive hands-on training class, bringing an average of 15 to 20 new Master Gardeners into the program each year in service to Island County.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t have the time or interest in becoming a volunteer but still want to become a better gardener? Learn about earning a <a href=\"https:\/\/greenschool.extension.wsu.edu\/home\/grow-with-wgs\/\">Washington Gardener Certificate<\/a> instead!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volunteering in our Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free Plant Clinics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each spring and summer, Master Gardeners staff free public plant clinics in various retail and public market locations across Island County. The educational program includes demonstrating environmentally responsible gardening, providing ideas for planning and maintaining gardens, experimenting with new plants and techniques, conducting workshops and serving as a resource for all gardeners, from beginner to experienced. Topics include vegetable gardening, composting, integrated pest management techniques, water management, fruit tree management and proper plant selection and maintenance for success in Island County growing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/Ed-Garden-Series-2026.pdf\">View the 2026 Master Gardener Education Series schedule (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 1.5rem\">Growing Food for our Neighbors<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"298\" height=\"233\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/19\/childrens_garden.jpg\" alt=\"Children in a garden. \" class=\"wp-image-71\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Volunteers at the Lord\u2019s Garden in Oak Harbor and Coupeville Community Garden help grow fresh, healthy vegetables for low-income seniors, homeless and abused women and children and others who experience food insecurity. Master Gardener Volunteers also help maintain vegetable gardens at NASWI and Olympic View and Crescent Harbor Elementary schools through the SNAP-Ed program, helping kids learn how fun it is to grow their own healthy food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Whidbey Gardening Workshop<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmgf.org\/\">Island County Master Gardener Foundation<\/a>, the Whidbey Gardening Workshop has educated and inspired gardeners from Whidbey Island and beyond for more than 30 years. Each March, the workshop offers more than 45 classes from expert instructors on all aspects of gardening. Gardeners ranging from beginner to advanced can choose from classes on garden care, maintenance and design with a focus on sustainability and the growing conditions in our maritime environment. Throughout the year trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals are propagated by Master Gardeners on Camano and Whidbey Islands for the annual plant sale in May. This is a great opportunity to pick up a variety of plants for spring planting in your garden.
