Educating Crabbers Introduction and Orientation

June 28, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee

Prevent Marine Debris – Educating Crabbers on Opening Weekend

  • July 1-3 & July 8-9 @ Port Townsend Boat Haven or Quilcene Boat Launch. 2-hour shifts–your choice of times
  • June 28, 5-6 pm – Orientation/Training at WSU Extension Office, 380 Jefferson St. PT)

The Jefferson MRC and Northwest Straits Foundation are educating crabbers about how to avoid losing crab pots, contributing to the estimated 12,000 lost in Puget Sound every year. These lost crab pots continue to capture crab, resulting in over 180,000 Dungeness crab killed each year. We’ve set up a friendly, easy outreach program targeting recreational crabbers at the beginning of the summer crabbing season.

Lost crab pots can often be prevented by following the checklist found at www.derelictgear.org  to ensure your pot is set correctly and remains in place until harvest time. The website has instructional videos, helpful apps, and additional resources to help keep your crab pots safe so you can catch more crab.

Volunteers will be giving away educational materials, gauges to measure your catch, and extra biodegradable string. Our goal is no more lost crab pots in Puget Sound and for everyone to have a successful day on the water. Please contact Tim Weissman at Jeff.co.mrc@gmail.com for more info, or to volunteer.
