KARLA LORTZ was six years old when she decided she would become a farmer when she grew up.

She became a Master Gardener in Federal Way in 1988, and moved to Harstine Island, near Shelton, Washington in 1990. She purchased the mail order division of Heather Acres in 1995, which became her ‘Heath and Heathers’ ( she then retired the Heather Acres name).

Today she owns and operates a container farm growing the largest collection of Heaths and Heathers in the United States and has one of the largest collections in the world. The display garden is on the mainland near Spencer Lake.

She travels the world, when she can, looking for new species.

She will be sharing her love of Heaths ( Erica  genus) , Heather ( Calluna genus ), their history and distinct differences, and how to plant and care for them.
