{"id":1710,"date":"2024-12-20T15:56:02","date_gmt":"2024-12-20T23:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/king\/?page_id=1710"},"modified":"2025-03-17T09:40:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T16:40:50","slug":"goats","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/king\/4-h\/4-h-overview\/programs-projects\/goats","title":{"rendered":"Goats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether youth own a dairy goat, meat goat, pygmy goat or are just curious about them, these activities provide enjoyable, hands-on experiences to introduce them to goats. &nbsp;Selection, feeding, management, fitting, showing and responsible goat ownership are emphasized for Dairy Goat, Meat Goat, Novelty\/Pygmy Goat, and Utility Goat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note there are age restrictions on this project area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth must be 8 by October 1st of the current 4-H year to be eligible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Competitive situations, such as livestock shows or sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enrollment in large animal projects, including Beef, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Sheep, Alpaca\/Llama, and Swine<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in shooting sports projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in projects using motorized vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in food preservation projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloverbuds, 4-H youth ages 5-7, may participate in a number of age-appropriate activities, though they may not participate in competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about eligibility please, contact your county 4-H coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate proper goat management and health practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop goat fitting and showing skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select a quality project animal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select animals suitable for their use in harness or as pack animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feed an animal properly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn about meat goat projects and marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groom and show the project goats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2083\/2024\/03\/2023_WVF_Naches-Valley-_Braxen-Sears_Goats.jpg\" alt=\"A child crouches beside 2 goats in a barn stall.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4-H Goat Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Available from the Extension office or online<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/dairy-goat-1-getting-your-goat\">Dairy Goat 1 \u2013 Getting Your Goat<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether youth own a dairy goat or are just curious about them, these activities provide enjoyable, hands-on experiences to introduce them to goats. Selection, feeding, management, fitting, showing and responsible goat ownership are emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/dairy-goat-2-stepping-out\">Dairy Goat 2 \u2013 Stepping Out<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth explore how to keep their goats healthy, feed them for maximum production, prepare for kidding, develop judging skills, milk a goat properly, and much more.
