{"id":1748,"date":"2024-12-20T16:53:10","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T00:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/king\/?page_id=1748"},"modified":"2025-03-06T14:49:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T22:49:17","slug":"llama-alpaca","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/king\/4-h\/4-h-overview\/programs-projects\/llama-alpaca","title":{"rendered":"Llama &amp; Alpaca"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Alpacas and llamas can make great pets and fun additions to a family farm.&nbsp; They can be loving companion animals and work animals.&nbsp; Alpaca fiber is also useful for crafts, textile making, and fiber arts.&nbsp; Youth in this project area will explore what kinds of llama or alpaca fit into their family\u2019s lifestyle and will be equipped with the skills to train and care for their animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note there are age restrictions on this project area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth must be 8 by October 1st of the current 4-H year to be eligible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Competitive situations, such as livestock shows or sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enrollment in large animal projects, including Beef, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Sheep, Alpaca\/Llama, and Swine<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in shooting sports projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in projects using motorized vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enrollment in food preservation projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloverbuds, 4-H youth ages 5-7, may participate in a number of age-appropriate activities, though they may not participate in competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about eligibility please, contact your county 4-H coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Learn about llama or alpaca breeds and identify their characteristics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study the responsibilities of alpaca and llama ownership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate their ability to care for their alpaca or llama through feeding, keeping records, grooming, and fitting their animal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn health regulations and first aid for simple ailments for their alpaca or llama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/2083\/2023\/12\/llamas-97337_1280.jpg\" alt=\"5 llamas stand in a fenced pen with a weathered farmhouse in the background\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4-H Alpaca &amp; Llama Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Available from the Extension office or online<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/indiana-4-h-lamas-llamas-alpacas-book-1\">Llamas &amp; Alpacas Book 1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamas, Book 1, describes the first steps in getting to know and care for lamas, which include the species of llamas, alpacas, vicunas, and guanacos. Youth will learn where lamas originated as well as basic information about lama care, grooming, building trust, training, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/indiana-4-h-lamas-llamas-alpacas-book-2\">Llamas &amp; Alpacas Book 2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamas, Book 2, builds on Lamas, Book 1, and describes continued training and care for lamas. Among other things, you learn about lama registration papers, lama communication, differences between llamas and alpacas, lama feed, lama training, lama showmanship, and using lama fleece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/indiana-4-h-lamas-llamas-alpacas-book-3\">Llamas &amp; Alpacas Book 3<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lamas Book 3 \u2013 the last in this series \u2013 builds on information presented in the first two books. Among other things, you will learn about lama social behavior, showing and judging, fiber types, body condition scoring, conditions that stress lamas, hiking with or driving a lama, guard lamas, careers that include lamas, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/llama-and-alpacas-helpers-guide\">Llama &amp; Alpacas Helper\u2019s Guide Digital Download<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cLama\u201d curriculum is designed to help youth develop both project and life skills. Activity\/project skills are specific to the subject matter of lamas, such as learning how to care for your lama. Life skills relate to the process a member undergoes when doing an activity. Life skills, such as making decisions or mastering technology, are useful long after the member has completed the project.
