Kitsap Harvest 2020 gleaning season is here

Posted by Abell Smith | June 30, 2020

Kitsap Harvest gleaning season is upon us! Volunteers new and old need to register using our new gleaning software. This is true for homeowners wishing to donate as well. Part of our COVID response in serving low-income/low-access recipients is a partnership with the Central Kitsap Foodbank. For the last three months we have been doing foodbank rescue, delivering approximately two-thousand pounds of food to area low-income senior housing. We would like to increase our delivery by adding extra days to our schedule; if you have a truck or would like to help make delivery boxes please email paisley.gallagher@wsu.edu!

Another change this year is mandatory background checks using Sterling Volunteers. If you are an existing volunteer for either 4-H or Master Gardeners, we can verify using that same background check. For those not familiar with Verified Volunteer, the cost to participants is $14 per person. We understand that the cost will be challenging for some, so we put together a scholarship fund for those who need assistance paying. Please email paisley.gallagher@wsu.edu if you would like to be considered for this scholarship. We believe that not only is the work we do important for the community, it is important for the person who gives themselves time to slow down and enjoy the revitalizing energy under the tree.

We have changed a couple things in response to COVID, such as group gleans will be limited to family members and close friends gleaning together. We have purchased additional gleaning equipment for homeowners to do their own glean and we will provide the crates and pickup.

Kitsap Harvest needs a few volunteers who can commit to helping us out through the summer. We need someone with a truck for deliveries every other week, admin help logging data from gleans, and sorters who help make distribution boxes. If you are able to commit through the summer to a couple hours each week we would be so grateful. Stay safe, stay happy, and we hope to see you all out under the tree soon enough.

Also still available – Grow-a-Row!

We are still accepting extra garden goodies. We have neighborhood captains set up throughout the county ready to accept your contributions and make them part of our distribution boxes. Click here for more info.
