Educational materials and resources provide guidance on animal nutrition, health, handling, biosecurity, recordkeeping, and ethical animal care practices. Access to accurate and science-based livestock information helps youth exhibitors make informed decisions that promote the well-being of their animals and support safe, high-quality food production.

The importance of 4-H livestock education extends beyond the show ring. Participation in livestock projects teaches responsibility, leadership, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills that benefit youth throughout their lives. By learning proper animal husbandry practices, members gain a stronger understanding of agriculture, stewardship, and the commitment required to care for animals daily.

In addition, livestock information and educational programming help ensure that youth exhibitors meet industry standards and expectations related to animal health, food safety, and animal welfare. These experiences help prepare participants for future opportunities in agriculture, veterinary science, education, and related industries while strengthening confidence and lifelong learning skills. The following livestock information is to help guide 4-H youth members and parents with livestock projects.

YQCA Certification

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) certification is valuable for youth involved in livestock projects because it focuses on animal care, food safety, animal well-being, and industry responsibility. It is commonly required for participation in fairs, livestock shows, and youth animal programs across the United States. There are two types of training available for YQCA Certification for 4-H youth member animal projects.

Market Livestock Affidavit & Health Records

All Market Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Goat exhibitors are required to complete a Market Health Form for each animal and submit the completed form upon arrival at the fair or livestock show. Failure to provide a completed form may affect the animal’s eligibility to exhibit or sell.

Exhibitors are strongly encouraged to take the Market Health Form with them at the time they purchase their animal so they can obtain all required animal identification information directly from the producer. These forms are an essential part of livestock recordkeeping and are used to document all medications, medicated feeds, treatment dates, and required withdrawal periods administered to market animals.

Accurate and up-to-date records are critical to ensuring animal health, food safety, and compliance with industry standards and fair or livestock show requirements. Exhibitors should keep the form with their project records and update it throughout the project year as treatments or feed changes occur, maintaining complete and accurate information of the animal.

Withdrawal of Vaccinations and Medications

Understanding and following medication and vaccination withdrawal times is a critical responsibility for all 4-H youth livestock exhibitors. One of the most common and most important questions regarding animal projects involves knowing when an animal is safe and eligible to enter the food supply after receiving a vaccination, medication, or medicated feed.

All youth members are required to carefully read, understand, and follow the withdrawal instructions and label directions provided for every vaccination, medication, and treatment administered to their animals. Withdrawal periods are established to help ensure that no harmful drug residues remain in meat products and to protect consumer health and food safety.

Failure to follow proper withdrawal times can result in residue violations, disqualification from exhibition or sale, financial loss, and damage to the reputation of the livestock industry and youth livestock programs. Maintaining accurate treatment records and adhering to all withdrawal requirements demonstrates responsible animal care, ethical livestock management, and a commitment to producing safe, high-quality food products.

4-H Animal Management and Ownership

The Washington State University 4-H Policy and Procedure Handbook, Section 8, contains essential information that all 4-H members, families, and volunteers should review and understand before beginning an animal project.
