{"id":1445,"date":"2020-06-04T09:59:02","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T16:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/pacific\/?page_id=1445"},"modified":"2026-04-06T11:21:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T18:21:21","slug":"starting-a-4-h-club","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/pacific\/youth\/join-4-h-2\/starting-a-4-h-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting a 4-H Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--sidebar-right\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A 4-H Club<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Is an organized group of youth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a planned program that is ongoing throughout all or most of the year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is advised by adult staff or volunteers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typically elects officers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May meet in any location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Includes opportunities to learn skills through a wide variety of project experiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offers opportunities for leadership, citizenship\/community service, and public speaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steps in Establishing a 4-H Club<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Contact the WSU Pacific County Extension office at 360-875-9331.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Become a leader by attending 4-H volunteer\/leader training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain county and state 4-H policies and guidelines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess youth, parent and community needs and interests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recruit potential club members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conduct an organizational meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recruit project leaders and distribute curricula.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete and submit enrollment and other appropriate reports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assist with club by-laws preparation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do We Recruit 4-H Members? How Many Should We Have?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>4-H clubs should have at least five members from&nbsp;3 or more families. Some suggest that 6 to 10 members per adult leader is an optimum number. Limit your first group to a number with which you and your co-leaders feel comfortable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruiting members is seldom hard to do. Start with a contact to your county Extension staff for names and ideas. You may find it helpful to recruit other adults to help with club leadership. Interested parents, 4-H alumni, or friends often are willing to help. This gives the leader much-needed assistance and provides continuity for club meetings. An older and experienced teen member can help to teach younger members and lead activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that 4-H must be available to all people equally without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do I Enroll My Members?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington State University Pacific County Extension uses <a href=\"https:\/\/v2.4honline.com\/\">4HOnline<\/a> for enrollment, please contact us for more information. All 4-H members must re-enroll every year.
