DESCRIPTION:WSU Master Gardener Kamori Cattadoris presents Edible Landscaping\, the use of food plants as design features in a landscape. These plants are used both for aesthetic value as well as consumption. Edible landscaping incorporates food-producing plants and flowers that you can eat. It combines fruit and nut trees\, berry bushes\, vegetables and herbs. \nLearn why you may want to landscape with edibles; enjoy the freshness and flavor of home-grown\, fully ripened fruits and vegetables\, control the quantity and kind of pesticides and herbicides used on the foods you consume\, increase the food security of your household\, save on grocery bills\, grow unusual varieties not available in stores\, and get outside\, interact with nature\, and have fun. By simply replacing an ornamental flower garden with edible herbs and flowers\, you can have beauty and function too. \nClass will be held at the WSU Extension Office in Newport on Thursday\, September 14\, 2023 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Located at 227 South Garden Avenue. SUMMARY:North County Native Plant Field Trip hosted by Community Presenter and Master Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:The Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners invite the public to join them on a special field trip exploring the rich native plant communities of north Pend Oreille County. The excursion\, offered in partnership with the Pend Oreille County Weed Board\, will take place Saturday\, June 13\, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. South County participants may meet at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the WSU Pend Oreille County Extension Office to receive maps\, review the day’s route\, and organize carpooling. All other attendees should plan to meet at the first stop\, which will be at Sweet Creek County Park at 9:00 a.m. where Weed Board staff will lead a guided “Weed Walk” focused on identifying native plants and discussing bagged noxious weeds. Following the park tour\, Tom Pulford\, from the Weed Board\, will lead the caravan to explore a variety of native trees\, shrubs\, and understory plants unique to the intermountain West. As time and road conditions allow\, the field trip will travel through several distinct ecological zones: beginning in the Ponderosa Pine Community near the river\, climbing into the mid‑elevation mixed conifer forest shaped by long winters\, and potentially reaching the subalpine zone\, where participants may have the chance to see the iconic Whitebark Pine.\nThis educational outing is free of charge and open to all. All attendees must provide their own transportation\, and 4‑wheel or all‑wheel drive vehicles are required for the upper‑elevation portions of the tour. Bring a sack lunch\, water\, mosquito protection\, hiking shoes\, and binoculars. Carpooling will be arranged at the start of the event. For community members interested in native plants\, forest ecology\, or simply experiencing the natural beauty of Pend Oreille County\, this field trip offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from knowledgeable guides in the landscapes they know best.

SUMMARY:Community Presenter – Public Education Class – Topic: Garden Hacks - Work Smarter\, Not Harder
DESCRIPTION:The WSU Pend Oreille County Master Gardeners will host a very special class on Garden Hacks: Work Smarter\, Not Harder\, on Thursday\, September 10\, at 1:00 p.m. at the WSU Pend Oreille County Extension Office\, located at 227A South Garden Avenue\, Newport WA. This class will be taught by longtime Inland Northwest Garden writer and consultant Pat Munts\, whose five decades of hands-on experience have shaped her practical\, efficient approach to gardening. \n  \nFrom her home garden in Spokane where she has weathered fire\, ice\, snow\, deer\, bugs\, heat\, cold\, and plenty of weeds\, Munts has developed strategies to make gardening easier at any age. She will share tips on moving materials around the garden\, keeping deer at bay\, controlling weeds\, propagating plants\, and repurposing castoff materials. Her message is clear: with the right techniques\, gardeners can continue enjoying their gardens well into their 70s and 80s. The cost of the class is $5 per person. \n  \nMunts writes a weekly gardening column for the Spokesman-Review and is co-author of the Northwest Gardeners Handbook\, the first book to fully address gardening conditions on both sides of the Cascades.
