SUMMARY:Lavender Connection Essential Oil Extraction
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder how farmers extract lavender essential oil from the plants? Join the Olson Family at Lavender Connection family farm on Sunday\, September 4th at 12:00pm to learn and watch the process of essential oil extraction\, using steam distillation! The demonstration will take approximately 30 minutes\, with plenty of time for questions. The class at noon will begin with firing up the still\, so if you’d like to watch the lavender harvest for extraction and/or the still being packed with lavender\, please plan to show up approximately 30 minutes early. After the demonstration\, stroll the fields\, bring a picnic\, and enjoy the farm – they are open that day from 10am-5:30pm and you’re welcome to stay as long as you like. \nLimited to 20 participants. All ages are welcome\, but due to the technical/science nature of the discussion\, not recommended for children under 8. \n  \nWhen: September 4th\, 2022\n12pm for essential oil extraction\, come 30 minutes early if you would like to watch the lavender harvest\nWhere: Lavender Connection\, 1141 Cays Rd. The class is outdoors\, but visitors will be grouped close together\, so masks are encouraged (and paper masks will be provided.) \nAbout Lavender Connection:\nLavender Connection is a small\, family owned and operated lavender farm featuring approximately 2500 plants of more than 40 different varieties. If the class fills up\, please note that the farm is open Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday\, and Monday until Labor Day – stop by any time this summer when they’re open and you might catch them distilling! DESCRIPTION:Join us at Wintercreek Farm in Poulsbo on September 13th from 4pm – 6pm for our next Dirt Talk Farm Walk all about Low-till farming practices. Farmer Robin Bodony will be opening up the farm to share her experience and expertise with no-till / low-till farming practices in a market farm setting. We will have Kitsap Conservation District partners on hand as well as our Regional IPM Specialist\, Laurel Mouton\, to discuss pest pressures in a low-till/no-till situation. Specific topics to be discussed include: \n\nNo-till and low-till tools and techniques for preparing beds for planting in a market garden setting\nUsing low tillage in concert with other soil health promoting strategies to produce quality crops (cover crops\, compost and mulches\, mineral balancing\, inter-planting)\nChallenges vs. benefits of low-tillage systems\n\nDirt Talk Farm Walks provide farmer-to-farmer education to promote the exchange of ideas and innovations related to sustainable and organic farming in our region. This farm walk is open to all beginning and current farmers\, not to the general public.  \nMore about Wintercreek Farm \nWintercreek Farm is a roughly one-acre\, intensive market garden in Poulsbo\, WA. SUMMARY:The Sawtooth Ranch Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join The Sawtooth Ranch for a guided tour of their integrated farming and ranching operation. Learn about the intersection of conservation and cultivation. They will share insights into the ways they incorporate animal husbandry and land management into a production model that supports a market farm and farmshare program. All while supporting sensitive habitat for native flora and fauna on protected land. \nThe tour will cover a substantial area of the property over approximately 90 minutes so please wear comfortable clothing and durable shoes\, and protection from the sun. Tammy believes in being good stewards of the land so that it will continue to provide for future generations.\n\nTammy will show you how she grows large quantities of food on a small amount of land in a sustainable way.  She will be highlighting permaculture techniques like swales and hugelkultur and show how she uses vertical gardening to grow large quantities of food on a small farm.  You will also learn about her techniques for overwintering crops to see how you too can grow fresh produce year-round on the Olympic Peninsula.\n\nTammy has been growing food for 30+ years.  In addition to farming\, she is a small farm and garden consultant.  She has a certification in Permaculture Design and Sustainable Agriculture.  Tammy especially enjoys helping beginner gardeners and farmers.\n\n\nWHEN: Sept 18th 3pm-4:30pm\nWHERE: Port Angeles\, WA (exact address to be given upon registering)\nAUDIENCE: Public\, Farmers\, Producers\, Gardeners (anyone interested in learning more about the topic!\n\nREGISTRATION: Parking is limited at this site so registration will be limited to 9 cars. SUMMARY:Dirt Talk Farm Walk: Meat Goat Production and Pasture Management at Bowman Farms
DESCRIPTION:Join farmer Mark Bowman of Bowman Farms in Port Angeles for an on-farm tour on September 21st from 3-5pm. Mark will be sharing his expertise about all things meat goat production with a focus on breeding and pasture management. Dirt Talk Farm Walks provide farmer-to-farmer education to promote the exchange of ideas and innovations related to sustainable and organic farming in our region.  \nThis farm walk is open to all beginning and current farmers\, not to the general public.    \nTopics to be discussed during the Farm Walk:  \n\nPasture-raised meat goat operation without using grain with a focus on pasture and grazing management on poor sandy soils using compost and other methods \nGoat breeds – a successful breeding program that showcases how to match breeding and birthing to maximize grazing and grass production to reduce hay costs.
