Instead, a person or group may be granted a right to use a volume of water, for a defined purpose, in a specific place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need a water right?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You will need a water right if you plan to use any amount of surface water (from a river, stream, spring, or lake) for any purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will need a water right if you plan to use groundwater (from a well) for any use, with these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/RCW\/default.aspx?cite=90.44.050\">exceptions<\/a>:\n<ul>\n<li>single or group domestic uses of less than 5,000 gallons per day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>industrial uses of less than 5,000 gallons per day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>irrigation of lawn or non-commercial garden, a half-acre or less in size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stock water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive your water from a utility, you don&#8217;t need a water right as long as your provider has the necessary rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find out if property has a water right:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First visit the WA Dept. of Ecology <a href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\/regulations-permits\/guidance-technical-assistance\/water-rights-search\">Water Rights Search Guidance webpage.<\/a> This has links to resources and tools helpful to landowners.
