SUMMARY:Mason and Leaf Cutter Bee Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn from Tony Suruda about the care of our native pollinators\, Mason and Leaf Cutter Bees\, and help prepare cocoons for a good spring bee population.    Autumn is the time to remove mason bee cocoons from nesting materials and clean them up for winter storage.   Participants in this hands-on workshop will see a variety of mason and leaf cutter bee nesting materials and as well as an illustrated guide to common pathogens and parasites of these bees.  Following the showing of an Oregon State University extension video on how to harvest and clean mason bee cocoons\, participants will open and clean phragmite reed nesting tubes from our demo garden at the Orcas School and from selected local gardens.   The bee cocoons will be place in  a suitable environment over the winter and then in April the cocoons will be placed out to hatch in the Orcas School Garden and at other sites. \n\n\n\nThe program will conclude with a raffle for a “Cabana” bee home from Crown Bees.

SUMMARY:Agroforestry Design: Farm Assessment and Site Plan
DESCRIPTION:This full-day workshop will be an opportunity for planning professionals and producers to learn about designing agroforestry projects in the San Juan Islands. Agroforestry offers farmers practical ways to integrate trees and shrubs into working lands—from combining trees with livestock or crops to establishing productive buffers along waterways. Thoughtful design can add new farm products while improving shade and shelter\, soil and water health\, habitat\, and overall farm resilience. The workshop will provide an overview of three types of agroforestry systems: alley cropping\, silvopasture\, and riparian forest buffers. Speakers will address species selection for both native and non-native trees based on soil moisture\, project area\, cooperator goals\, and more. Participants will come together to create agroforestry designs for an active project site. \n\n\n\nAgroforestry Northwest (AFNW) is partnering with the San Juan Islands Conservation District (SJICD) and Washington State University – San Juan County Extension (WSU) to host this event. Agroforestry Northwest (AFNW) is a leader in advancing agroforestry across the Pacific Northwest\, bringing two decades of regional experience to the growing movement for resilient\, productive\, and ecologically sound landscapes. AFNW’s mission is to expand the understanding and adoption of agroforestry throughout the West Coast by connecting practical land stewardship with deep ecological and cultural knowledge. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be led by AFNW experts in agroforestry\, Indigenous ethnobotany and land history\, ecology\, wetlands\, and forestry.
