Everyone had the chance to learn about and practice showmanship with the following species:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Beef Cattle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sheep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dairy Goat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We all had a great time learning from some experts in showmanship and experiencing what it takes to get your animal fair-ready. A special thank you to our presenters, the Toth Family from Skagit County and Sienna Traynor (SJC 4-H Alum), for sharing their expertise. It was very exciting to see a large number of the livestock animals that will be exhibited at the fair, including four beef, nine lambs, and five hogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A huge thank you to all of the leaders, volunteers, and parents who helped make the event a success. Thanks to the San Juan County Fairgrounds for providing access to the Marie Boe Building for Fair Entry support, for providing staff to assist in getting the 4-H arena tent raised and to the Honeywell Charitable Foundation for their financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Learning Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While we don\u2019t have any learning opportunities on the calendar currently, Clinton would be happy to make a visit to your club meeting to provide fair support in registration, showmanship, and answer any fair-related questions about what to class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-heading--style-marked\">Teen Conference Recap<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--halves\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<p>The annual Washington State 4-H Teen Conference concluded on Thursday June, 26th. 140 youth, adults, and guests invaded the campus of Washington State University. Youth had the opportunity to stay in Orton Hall, one of WSU&#8217;s residence halls, participate in workshops, and take tours of various campus departments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there were lots of learning opportunities, youth also had lots of time to hang out and visit with each other and participate in a dance, challenge activities, and a community service project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinton got to facilitate a workshop on how a bill becomes a law and hosted a mock committee hearing on a fictional proposed bill. This is also the theme for this year&#8217;s Know Your Government conference. I also attended workshops on law school and drone building. I had the opportunity to tour the School of Food Science where learned about new food products and got to participate in a blind food taste test. The Shaw Island 4-H Club invited Orcas Island artist, Brook Meinhardt, to do a demonstration on Beach Trash Art. There were about 15 youth participating in creating amazing art pieces with up-cylced beach trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brook brought a variety of washed and cleaned styrofoam, plastic, rope, and other things that washed up on the beach. Youth were encouraged to create birds out of the items but their imagination was really the only limitation. We saw an eagle, jellyfish, skateboard ramp, and so many other amazing creations being built. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the 4-H youth plan to exhibit some of their creations at the Fair and the Shaw Island Club is looking to do a group exhibit\/mobile of their creations.
