This manual, Learning About Beekeeping, introduces bees and beekeeping and is intended to prepare learners to set up their own hive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/working-with-honey-bees?variant=40221097721958\">Level 2 \u2013 Working with Honey Bees Digital Download<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">This manual, Working with Honey Bees, is for youth who have completed Level 1 and feel ready to start a beehive. Activities in this manual help youth as they acquire a colony and learn how to care for their beehive throughout the year. It also introduces basic beekeeping operations resulting in the production of extracted, chunk or cut comb honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/advanced-beekeeping?_pos=3&amp;_psq=beekeeping&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0\">Level 3 \u2013 Advanced Beekeeping Digital Download<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Level 3 &#8211; Advanced Beekeeping is for a young beekeeper who is experienced and knowledgeable in the basic care of a beehive. Challenges youth with activities related to leg structure, oral reasons, feed ingredients, behavior, parasites, and ethical issues. Youth will develop life skills while exploring beef science!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity wsu-spacing-after--small wsu-spacing-before--small\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Please note there are age restrictions on this project area:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Youth must be 8 by October 1st of the current 4-H year to be eligible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Competitive situations, such as livestock shows or sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\"><strong>Enrollment in large animal projects, including Beef, Dairy, Goat, Horse, Sheep, Alpaca\/Llama, and Swine<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Enrollment in shooting sports projects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Enrollment in projects using motorized vehicles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Enrollment in food preservation projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-before--small wsu-spacing-after--small wsu-spacing-top--none\">Cloverbuds, 4-H youth ages 5-7, may participate in a number of age-appropriate activities, though they may not participate in competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions about eligibility please, contact your county 4-H coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity wsu-spacing-before--small wsu-spacing-after--small\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-spacing-after--small\">Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Youth will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Learn basic principles of animal science through the owning, raising, and care of one or more animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Select cattle based on breed characteristics and feed, winter, house, and care for for the market steer, as well as potentially breeding the animal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Fit, show, and market the steer for auction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Evaluate a carcass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"wsu-spacing-after--sxxsmall\">Manage a herd, if more than one animal is raised<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity wsu-spacing-before--small wsu-spacing-after--small\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-spacing-after--small\">4-H Beef Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Available from the Extension office or online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/beef-curriculum-1-bite-into-beef\">Level 1:&nbsp; Bite Into Beef<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Youth identify breeds, locate parts, judge, halter break a calf, fit a steer, show a calf, recognize a healthy animal, select feed ingredients and shop for beef and beef by-products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/beef-curriculum-2-heres-the-beef\">Level 2: Here\u2019s the Beef<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Challenges youth with activities related to leg structure, oral reasons, feed ingredients, behavior, nose printing, parasites, fitting, ethical issues, beef carcass composition and retail meat cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/beef-curriculum-3-leading-the-charge\">Level 3:&nbsp; Leading the charge<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">Selection and judging, feeds, careers, health, reproduction, and meats and marketing encourage more in depth learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\"><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/beef-curriculum-helpers-guide\">Beef:&nbsp; Helper\u2019s Guide<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selection, breed identification, parts identification, handling, grooming, showing, budgeting, identifying parasites, controlling fleas and spaying activities are featured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity wsu-spacing-before--small wsu-spacing-after--small\" \/>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/shop4-h.org\/products\/copy-of-exploring-beef-health-and-husbandry?_pos=1&amp;_sid=e09917ff6&amp;_ss=r\">Exploring Beef Health and Husbandry<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wsu-spacing-after--small\">This curriculum is designed as the guide for a project facilitator. The activities and background information in this curriculum will help youth develop the requisite knowledge and skills associated with raising and showing beef cattle.
