Curious about where your food comes from? Wondering what organizations support local farms, gardens, and food security? Looking for fun, hands-on activities for the whole family?<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Ag Tent<\/b> in the Green Village at the <\/span>San Juan County Fair<\/b>, August 13\u201316, is your destination to explore the rich diversity of agriculture in San Juan County. Coordinated by <\/span>WSU San Juan County Extension<\/b>, the Ag Tent showcases the farmers, educators, and organizations working together to strengthen local agriculture, expand access to local food, and build a resilient island food system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you’re a farmer, gardener, food lover, or simply curious about agriculture in the islands, the Ag Tent offers opportunities to ask questions, discover local resources, connect with community organizations, and learn something new. Throughout the weekend, visitors can also enjoy the <\/span>Green Village Speaker Series<\/b>, featuring presentations from organizations throughout the Green Village on topics ranging from local farming and food systems to marine ecology, wildlife, sustainability, and cooking with local ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors can meet local organizations, browse educational resources, and enjoy interactive exhibits throughout the Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • WSU San Juan County Extension<\/b> \u2013 Learn about Extension programs and events supporting local agriculture and pick up research-based publications and practical resources for farmers, gardeners, landowners, and home food producers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • San Juan County Extension Master Gardeners<\/b> \u2013 <\/span>Discover ways to support pollinators using our bloom calendar and test your knowledge of native plants and pollinators. Create a fun bumble bee craft to take home. Master Gardener volunteers will be available daily from <\/span>10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.<\/b>, and everyone is invited to play <\/span>Pollinator Bingo<\/b> on Sunday.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild<\/b> \u2013 Learn about resources available for local farmers and eaters, and discover how local organizations are working together to support the future of farming in San Juan County.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • San Juan Island Grange<\/b> \u2013 Learn about Overmarsh Farm Commons, the Grange’s chicken incubation and brooder lending program, and other efforts supporting community agriculture. Curious about Overmarsh Farm Commons? Hear from organizers and participants on <\/span>Friday at 12pm<\/b> as part of the speaker series.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A shared resource table will also feature information from additional organizations working throughout the county, including the <\/span>San Juan Islands Conservation District<\/b>, <\/span>San Juan County Agricultural Resources Committee (ARC)<\/b>, <\/span>San Juan Islands Food Hub<\/b>, <\/span>San Juan Islands Grain Hub<\/b>, <\/span>Kwiaht<\/b>, <\/span>Lopez Community Land Trust<\/b>, <\/span>Island Grown Farmers Cooperative (IGFC)<\/b>, <\/span>Friday Harbor Food Bank<\/b>, and <\/span>Orcas Food Bank<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Green Village Speaker Series<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Just outside the Ag Tent, the Green Village Speaker Series offers four days of free presentations and demonstrations from organizations throughout the Green Village. Topics range from agriculture and gardening to marine life, wildlife, sustainability, and local food. All presentations are included with Fair admission.     Come learn about the different whales, dolphin, and porpoise species we have here in the Salish Sea! The Whale Museum’s Education Director, Tracie Merrill, will give an overview of our local cetacean species, including whale calls. You’ll also have the opportunity to touch and look at very cool specimens (whale teeth, baleen, skulls, vertebrae, etc.) <\/span><\/p>\n

Using the latest USDA Census data, Jay Kimball will explore what island farms actually earn, why the next generation can’t afford to buy in, and some innovative pathways already taking root in the islands. Lauren Bigelow (San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild and ARC) will share how the Ag Guild and partner organizations\u00a0are taking steps\u00a0to develop community-based solutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
