SUMMARY:Farm Machinery Safety Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Who can attend?\nIndividuals in Skagit\, Whatcom\, Island\, Snohomish and San Juan Counties are eligible to attend the training. Last year’s class contained a good mix of middle school\, high school and Spanish- and English-speaking adults. Certification can be obtained for students 13 years of age and above. \nWhy attend?\nAccording to the U.S. Ag Census\, the leading sources of fatal injuries to youth on U.S. farms\, 23% percent involved machinery (includes tractors)\, 19% involved motor vehicles (includes ATVs)\, and 16% were due to drowning.  Many of these accidents can be prevented with adequate safety education. \nCertification\nFederal law requires those driving tractors for hire to be at least 16 years old.  An exception is if they are 14 or 15 years old and have completed a safety course like this one\, or if a student is enrolled as a vocational agriculture student. \nBut I already know how to drive a tractor and I’m really safe?\nGreat\, register\, take the written test\, the preoperational test and the driving test. Pass each test\, pay your fee\, and you will be done on the first week. \nWhat does it cost?\nThe total cost of the workshop is $100. A deposit of $50 is required hold your spot. Free admission and free parking; proceeds support the Skagit County Master Gardener Foundation. \nSkagit County WSU Extension Master Gardeners invite you to the 32nd Annual Plant Fair on Saturday\, May 9\, 2026\, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon\, Washington. Free admission and free parking make this a welcoming event for all gardeners. \nFind thousands of high‑quality\, locally grown plants selected for success in Skagit County: tomatoes (more than 40 varieties)\, annual flowers\, perennials\, Northwest natives\, trees\, shrubs\, ferns\, vegetables\, and herbs. \nShop more than 50 food\, plant\, and garden‑gift vendors in the Emporium\, get tools sharpened for free\, and visit the Plant Clinic for answers to your gardening questions\, demonstrations\, and practical advice. A free “plant parking” area is available so you can leave purchased plants while you continue to shop. \nMaster Gardeners promote sustainable gardening techniques that grow local food and improve individual and community health and wellness.
