SUMMARY:Livestock Advisor Training Begins
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in raising beef\, sheep\, poultry\, goats for meat\, milk or fiber? WSU Livestock Advisor training begins a new 10-week series of classes March 3\, 2020 at Stanwood High School.  From fencing\, feeding\, housing\, breeding to pasture management\, learn how to raise high quality livestock sustainably. Network with WSU Livestock Advisors who share similar experiences and successes while raising livestock. Whether for your own family’s use or to increase your animals’ market value\, our training will help you develop a strategic plan incorporating livestock onto your farm. \nAccording to WSU Program Coordinator Joan DeVries\, a recent graduate stated\, “This program helped us make wise choices about which livestock would work for our environment. The course provided a network of contacts\, and the instructors and our classmates were extremely supportive. We’re now producing the vast majority of our food and we’re happy to give back to the community through WSU’s volunteer opportunities.” Several local farm tours are also included. \nParticipants are asked to return 50 hours of volunteer time over a two-year period\, crafting the experience to match their availability and interests. \nCost of the training is $125 with a second person from the farm or family free. Offered Tuesday evenings beginning March 3 and running until May 3 from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. Classes are held at Stanwood High School\, Stanwood\, WA. Download an application at https://wpcdn.web.wsu.edu/extension/uploads/sites/57/2020/02/Livestock-Advisor-Application-2020.pdf . Questions? Call 360-428-4270. \nWashington State University Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of non-compliance may be reported through your local Extension office. If you desire special accommodation while attending an Extension event\, please notify the WSU Skagit County Extension office at 360–428-4270. If you do not request special accommodation 24 hours in advance\, we cannot guarantee its availability on site.

SUMMARY:Livestock Advisors Farm Tour: Jonasson Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Livestock Advisor Program is offering this free farm tour. Please visit farmtours.brownpapertickets.com to register. \nHosts: Don & Linda Jonasson\nWe are a family-run farm established in the 1980s and are located just west of Burlington\, off of I-5. We are committed to raising our livestock in as healthy and natural a method as possible. We raise and sell Suffolk sheep\, White and Natural Colored Border Leicester sheep\, locker lambs\, sheepskins\, roving and batting\, and raw\, washed\, and dyed fleeces. We show our sheep and fleeces at the Skagit County Fair\, Evergreen State Fair\, and at the Washington State Fair. \nThe Suffolk fleeces make great sock yarn. The Border Leicester fleeces are amazingly soft and lustrous. If you haven’t tried Border Leicester wool\, treat yourself to some! It is an easy to spin wool even for the newest spinner. Our annual wool sale is held the first Saturday of November from 8 am to 3 pm at our farm. www.jonassonfarm.com

SUMMARY:Livestock Advisors Farm Tour: Jo's Fleece Fields
DESCRIPTION:The Livestock Advisor Program is offering this free farm tour. Please visit farmtours.brownpapertickets.com to register. \nHosts: Don and Jodi Stanwyck\nJo’s Fleece Fields is a small family farm (6.5 acres) dedicated to raising the finest natural fibers and producing eggs from uncaged poultry. Our fiber production is through a herd of 30 huacaya alpacas and 30 fiber goats (commercially cashmere and mohair production). We also maintain flocks of chickens\, ducks\, geese\, and turkeys from which we collect eggs. Egg sales are to subscribed customers. \nThe farm tour at Jo’s Fleece Fields will include time meeting the various animals and some time spent discussing the fiber we produce. Well provide an opportunity to engage in a fiber craft so those on the tour will be able to make and take a small memento of their visit. Our farm store will also be open for those who want to see the rovings\, yarns\, rug yarns\, rugs\, scarves\, and other items make from our fiber. We’ll also cover farm operation\, composting\, farm management practices\, and what we do to be the most responsible livestock owners we can be. If you’re interested in seeing what you can do with a small acreage and an interest in livestock this may be the tour for you.
