SUMMARY:Seed Saving for Food Access
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of seed saving for the backyard gardener! During the COVID pandemic\, interuptions in the food supply highlighted the need for increased food soveriegnty and backyard gardens. Backyard gardeners bought seed in record breaking numbers\, resulting in national seed shortage and prevented many people from growing their own food. It is more critical than ever to learn the basic methods of seed saving to ensure food access. Seed saving also lowers cost and allows growers to ensure their varieties are especially suited to their specific region and growing conditions. \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn the basics of seed saving including terms\, what can be saved by the backyard gardener\, how to grow and harvest seed\, seed viability\, as well as processing and storage options.

SUMMARY:Grow Your Groceries series\, accelerated course
DESCRIPTION:This very popular course typically sells out quickly\, so please register ASAP to reserve your spot! Normally offered as a weekly course held over 3 months\, we are offering this as an accelerated option with class twice weekly running for 6 weeks. There is no difference in content and class hours\, just holding two classes per week instead of one. As usual\, all classes are recorded and students have access to recordings for 6+ months. This makes it easy to make up a missed class\, review topics–some students plan to attend asynchronously\, watching recordings instead of live lessons and using email to contact instructor with questions or support. \nBy beginning this series in the winter season\, students will be able to gain knowledge in time for them to take advantage of the 2023 growing season. \nThis course will cover all aspects of home gardening for food production as well as seed saving\, perennial food forests and fruit production\, eco-cooking/waste reduction\, and four classes devoted to preserving the food after harvest. The first 6 classes will be somewhat similar to the Seed to Supper program\, an award winning curriculum developed by Oregon State University with the goal of providing a comprehensive backyard gardening course for households on a budget. This program is followed by two independent classes: Perennials (fruits\, food forests etc) and Seed Saving. The final four classes are dedicated to preserving the harvest. Class is designed as a cohort in which a student group completes the program together. \nBy enrolling in the 12 class program\, you may take advantage of a steeply discounted rate of $140 which includes 20 packages of organic seed (valued at $60+)-this rate also includes all ticket fees. If you are low income or have need\, we do have a limited number of partial scholarships available–please contact us for details. \nThis cohort will not meet in person but utilize remote instruction via Zoom. This will be our sixth cohort offered in this manner and feedback from participants has been very positive. One benefit of remote instruction is that all sessions will be recorded\, creating an opportunity for participants to make up a missed class at their convenience. We utilize Google Classroom to post a HUGE collection of downloadable/printable resources and links for videos and supplies\, as well as class recordings\, so although we intend for this class to be attended by participants each week\, it is totally possible to keep up with the course at your own pace by watching the class recording videos and utilizing the resources on Google Classroom. Very flexible for folks with scheduling conflicts! Class begins October 18th and meets twice a week\, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 pm with most classes running about 90 minutes. The last class of the series is currently scheduled for Thanksgiving\, so this will be rescheduled to another date best for the participant group.
