{"id":1230,"date":"2014-03-26T12:02:36","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T19:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ext100.wsu.edu\/skagit\/?page_id=1230"},"modified":"2025-11-12T11:55:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T19:55:16","slug":"welcome-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/skagit\/welcome-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to 4-H!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--sidebar-right\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What is 4-H?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4-H is built upon the principles of developing belonging, mastery, generosity and independence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Youth, ages 5 &#8211; 19, participate in Washington through community clubs, after-school \/ school enrichment programs, and day \/ overnight camps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kids can choose from a wide variety of subject areas&#8212;everything from computer technology to the arts, and from robotics to plant and animal sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 4-H program is a voluntary, non-formal, educational program offered to all boys and girls regardless of race, color, national origin, place of residence, or handicap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The curriculum is science-based and developed at our nation&#8217;s land-grant universities. 4-H programs are delivered by Washington State University educators in every county alongside 10,000 caring adult volunteers. Today 4-H is everywhere\u2013in cities, suburbs, small towns, and rural communities. In the 21st century, 4-H serves a broad clientele with expanded program using a variety of ways to \u201clearn by doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2019\/07\/4H_Icons_Grouped.jpg\" alt=\"The head, heart, hands, and health symbols.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do the H&#8217;s in 4-H stand for?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2019\/07\/Small-Icon.jpg\" alt=\"Head symbol\" class=\"wp-image-10466\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>4-H challenges you to think and make decisions, both for yourself and as a member of a group. You will discover new ways to do things and different ways of dealing with everyday challenges. 4-H is big on self-discipline, responsibility, initiative, and leadership. You will become a positive force in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2019\/07\/Small-Icon4-1.png\" alt=\"Heart symbol\" class=\"wp-image-10474\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>4-H members often talk to club leaders and to each other about what matters to them. 4-H gives you a chance to become friends with other young people and caring adults. It is about building character, accepting people who are different, and making your community a better place to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2019\/07\/Small-Icon3.jpg\" alt=\"Hands symbol\" class=\"wp-image-10482\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 4-H, you learn skills that you can use for the rest of your life. You won\u2019t just talk about it, you will actually get your hands on it, learn by doing. Members choose from about 100 different skills\u2014 everything from bicycle safety to cooking to computer technology to veterinary science. 4-H often helps members discover interests that lead to rewarding careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2019\/07\/Small-Icon2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Health symbol\" class=\"wp-image-10476\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Being healthy means feeling good; doing your best to balance school, friends, and family; and making the best choices. 4-H focuses on developing healthy lifestyles and understanding what happens when you make unhealthy choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vision<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington State University 4-H Youth Development is developing young people to become productive citizens who are engaged in positive change, meeting the needs of a diverse and changing society.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mission<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4-H youth development education creates supportive environments for all youth and families to reach their fullest potential.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4-H is the nation\u2019s largest youth development organization. We reach out to kids and their families to build skills for real life.
