the results can be huge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=itYK_Sddx0k\">Buy Wisely<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/reducing-food-waste-eight-tips-home-cooks\">Cook Carefully<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hennepin.us\/choose-to-reuse\/tips\/leftover-ideas\">Eat It All<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did you know?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The average <a href=\"http:\/\/skagitcountytrends.org\/\"><strong>Skagit County resident<\/strong><\/a> disposes of nearly 4 lbs. of waste every day, or 1,460 lbs. a year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A family of four can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buysalvagefood.com\/save-food\/ways-to-reduce-food-waste.html\"><strong>save<\/strong> <\/a>an average of $1800 per year by <a href=\"https:\/\/refed.org\/food-waste\/consumer-food-waste\"><strong>preventing food waste<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated 25% of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\/Waste-Toxics\/Reducing-recycling-waste\/Waste-reduction-programs\/Organic-materials\/Food-waste-prevention\">food lost or wasted could be saved<\/a><\/strong>, it would be enough to feed 870 million people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here in the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/foodlossandwaste\/why#:~:text=Reducing%20food%20waste%20can%20save%20or%20make%20money&amp;text=For%20farmers%2C%20businesses%2C%20and%20organizations,food%20out%20of%20the%20garbage.\"><strong>40% of all food is wasted<\/strong>.<\/a> In contrast, one out of every eight people is food insecure, one in six being children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Washington, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\/Waste-Toxics\/Reducing-recycling-waste\/Waste-reduction-programs\/Organic-materials\/2022-organics-management-law\">Department of Ecology<\/a><\/strong> found that 17% of all garbage sent to landfills is food waste, and up to 8% was edible at the time of disposal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/savethefood.com\/\"><strong>Food waste prevention strategies <\/strong><\/a>reduce the amount of food waste being created.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skagitgleaners.org\/\">Food Rescue<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skagitcounty.net\/Departments\/publicworkssolidwaste\/compost.htm\">Composting<\/a><\/strong> reduce the amount of edible food that is discarded in a landfill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecology.wa.gov\/Waste-Toxics\/Reducing-recycling-waste\/Waste-reduction-programs\/Organic-materials\/Food-waste-prevention\/Use-Food-Well-Washington-Plan\">Prevention is the priority<\/a>, and now is the time to take action!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the words used to describe food waste prevention?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/foodwaste\/faqs\"><strong>Wasted Food<\/strong><\/a>: the edible portion of food waste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/recycle\/preventing-wasted-food-home\"><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/a>: refers to avoiding the wasting of food in the first place and represents the greatest potential for cost savings and environmental benefits for us all.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/blog\/2020\/08\/13\/good-samaritan-act-provides-liability-protection-food-donations\">Rescue<\/a>:<\/strong> refers to the redistribution of surplus edible food to other users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recovery: refers to processing inedible food waste to extract value from it, through <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.extension.wsu.edu\/backyard-composting\">Composting <\/a><\/strong>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goskagit.com\/wiggling-red-worms-perfect-for-composting-a-great-learning-tool-for-kids\/article_b7b456e8-9b21-5c89-9182-703a7c30e104.html\"><strong>Vermiculture<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopfoodwasteday.com\/en\/cookbook.html\">Digital Food Waste Cookbook<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2023\/04\/cookbook.png\" alt=\"Stop Food Waste Day Cookbook Cover\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2020\/03\/fcs-e1680143996224.jpg\" alt=\"Family &amp;
