{"id":28183,"date":"2026-06-20T12:15:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T19:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/skagit\/?p=28183"},"modified":"2026-06-20T12:37:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T19:37:42","slug":"discovery-garden-celebrates-30th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/extension.wsu.edu\/skagit\/2026\/06\/20\/discovery-garden-celebrates-30th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery Garden Celebrates 30th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>June 27 Open House to Showcase \u201cJewel of a Teaching Garden\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MOUNT VERNON \u2013The WSU Extension Skagit County Master Gardener Discovery Garden officially took root in 1996 and over the past three decades has flourished as a community hub for education, an inspiration, and a classroom for how to care for and protect the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/extension\/uploads\/sites\/57\/2026\/06\/20210507_115219-792x594.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28108\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Master gardeners invite the community to celebrate the 30<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary of the Discovery Garden at an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the garden, 16602 State Route 536 (Memorial Highway), just west of the Washington State University Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center&nbsp;(NWREC). Admission and parking are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The open house will highlight the Discovery Garden and also includes the neighboring Salal Native Plant Garden and the NW Fruit Garden, showcasing a wide variety of trees, berries, native plants, and more on a total of eight acres.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The open house will feature three gardens:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discovery Garden:&nbsp;<\/strong>This<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>1.5-acre oasis is maintained by the volunteers of the WSU Extension Skagit County Master Gardener Program. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/skagitmg.org\/home\/discovery-garden\/\">Discovery Garden<\/a>&nbsp;features 33 garden \u201crooms,\u201d ranging from herbs and heathers to roses and vegetables, designed to educate and inspire gardeners of all ages. Master gardeners will be on site to answer questions, demonstrate best practices, and inspire home gardeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Salal Native Plant Garden:&nbsp;<\/strong>Adjacent to the Discovery Garden, this half-acre greenspace of native plants is maintained by volunteers of the Washington Native Plant Society\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnps.org\/salal\">Salal Chapter<\/a>&nbsp;to demonstrate how native plants can be incorporated into the home landscape. A shaded trail leads visitors into a natural setting featuring dogwood, salal, cascara, vine maple, ferns, trillium, and more.
