SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Growing the Carrot\, Lettuce\, Corn\, Broccoli & Rhubarb Families
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Carrot (Apiaceae) family also includes parsnips\, celery and with many herbs like dill\, fennel\, and caraway. We will cover members of the lettuce (Asteraceae) family\, as well as the corn (Poaceae) family\, broccoli (Brassicaceae) family which includes broccoli\, cabbage\, kale\, cauliflower\, mustard\, Brussels sprouts and as well as the buckwheat (Polygonaceae) family which includes rhubarb and sorrel. Topics covered include variety selection\, cultural requirements\, and common pests and diseases affecting these families. \nSpeaker:  Rosy Smit was raised on a dairy farm in Canada and has been involved in growing food and agriculture since a young age.  With an undergraduate degree in Agro-Ecology and a M.Sc. in Soil Science\, she has grown vegetables\, flowers and herbs\, fruit and berries and assorted livestock on commercial and backyard scales and taught food system educational topics to all ages.  She still thinks seed germination is magical and is excited to help more people learn how to grow their own food. \nGrowing Groceries\nIn partnership with WSU Snohomish County Master Gardeners\, the Growing Groceries program brings beginning and experienced gardeners together with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices. \nNo matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck\, small garden space\, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh\, healthy food in a healthier\, more environmentally friendly way. \nDeveloped over the last decade\, our program goal is to increase community access to fresh\, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food. \nWSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination.
