SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Seed Starting and Growing Transplants
DESCRIPTION:  \nBeginning with how and when to start to seeds\, to watering techniques\, thinning\, and transplanting\, you’ll learn how to save money and be successful in starting your vegetables from seed. \nSpeaker :\nRosy Smit was raised on a dairy farm in Canada and has been involved in growing food and agriculture since a young age.  With an undergraduate degree in Agro-Ecology and a M.Sc. in Soil Science\, she has grown vegetables\, flowers and herbs\, fruit and berries and assorted livestock on commercial and backyard scales and taught food system educational topics to all ages.  She still thinks seed germination is magical and is excited to help more people learn how to grow their own food. \nGrowing Groceries\nIn partnership with WSU Snohomish County Master Gardeners\, the Growing Groceries program brings beginning and experienced gardeners together with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices. \nNo matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck\, small garden space\, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh\, healthy food in a healthier\, more environmentally friendly way. \nDeveloped over the last decade\, our program goal is to increase community access to fresh\, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food. \nWSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 31st from 11am to 1pm you can create beautiful collage art using recycled paper you can find around the house and learn about sustainability in the Snohomish County and beyond!\n\nJoin volunteers from WSU Snohomish County Extension Sustainable Community Stewards at the Community Resource Center in Stanwood to create upcycled art and to learn how to reduce waste in Snohomish County. Then bring your (clean) Styrofoam to our FREE collection event on Saturday\, August 2nd from 10am to 12pm (2-hour collection window) to the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park!\n\nThe Snohomish County WSU Sustainable Community Stewards will be waiting in the parking lot near the Center at 600 128th St. SE\, Everett\, WA to collect your Styrofoam\, which will then be trucked down to StyroRecycle in Kent.\n\nCollection will take place from 10am to 12pm. SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Growing Berries in Western Washington
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of growing blueberries\, strawberries\, raspberries\, and blackberries including variety selection\, siting and soils\, planting\, mulching\,  irrigation\, fertilization\, pruning\, along with management of common pests and diseases including Spotted Wing Drosophila. \nSpeaker:\nDr. Tom Walters is a researcher and consultant for northwest berry growers\, helping them find ways to raise berries more profitably and sustainably through his company\, Walters Ag Research. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University with an emphasis on field plant breeding and holds a B.A. in biology from Reed College in Portland. Dr. Walters worked in the field for Sakuma Brothers Farms\, Inc. in Burlington where he was responsible for research supporting nursery and fruit production on more than 500 acres in Washington state. In addition\, he worked on berry research at the WSU NW Research Station in Mt. DESCRIPTION:Got broken stuff? Toss it? No way! Bring it to a WSU Repair Café!\nYou can bring your household goods and our fixers will diagnose the issue and do their best to make it usable again. They will show you their process\, order parts if necessary\, and help you learn how to do it yourself with one-on-one instruction. Our fixers can repair your items and keep stuff from being tossed in the landfill!\n\n\nSteps To Participate:\n\nArrive at the Mountlake Terrace Library between 10am and 2pm.\nRepair Specialists will be on-site to help with your item and will work with you on repairing.\nPlease arrive before 1PM for most repairs\, as the last hour is usually filled with completing repairs rather than taking on new projects.\n\n\nPlease note:\n\nWe cannot fund the cost of any additional parts needed. If your item needs a part for repair\, our volunteer will contact you to discuss this with you.\nWe don’t guarantee repairs\, and we are not responsible for any damages from attempting to repair an item. SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Basics of Irrigation & Weed Management
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a discussion of several types of irrigation products and their application in the food garden. In addition\, we’ll focus on the details of installing drip irrigation and its application for gardens and plants. \nSpeakers:\nRichard Simpson has been in the irrigation business for over 40 years. Starting out by digging ditches for his brother-in-law’s installation company\, he ended up doing most of the bidding and project management. He and his wife\, Peggy\, ran their own sprinkler installation company for over 10 years\, putting in everything from self-designed residential jobs to large school\, park\, and commercial installations. After deciding that working half-days (6 AM to 6 PM) was a little much\, he was talked into joining his main sprinkler supplier as an outside salesman and filled that role for almost 30 years with a short 2 year break in the middle as a designer/consultant for a local firm specializing in golf course and ballfield irrigation. His project sales have taken him around most of the Northwest and he has had the good fortune to work with many knowledgeable and professional people in the irrigation industry. To till or not to till?  In addition\, you’ll learn what is good compost\, where to find it\, how to use it to enrich your garden\, as well as how to make compost from your own kitchen and yard waste. \nSpeakers:\nPete Mackay\, a Master Gardener since 2015\, has been an active member of the Snohomish County Master Gardener program assisting with clinics\, demonstration gardens\, potting parties\, and the annual plant sale. Always eager to add to his expertise\, Pete takes part in the Native Plant/Animal and Perennial study groups\, as well as mentoring new Master Gardener interns and other organizational roles. \nJackie Trimble has been a Master Gardener since 2009\, but gardening has been a passion all her life. She considers herself a lifelong learner and continues to enjoy the peace and satisfaction that gardening provides and marvel at what she has yet to learn. SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Starting a Vegetable Garden
DESCRIPTION:  \nIncludes a discussion on site selection\, raised beds\, planning your crop calendar\, plant families\, inter-cropping\, succession planting\, and crop rotation. We’ll also talk about raising vegetables in containers including container types\, soil\, drainage\, fertilizer\, irrigation\, and strategies for maximizing your harvest. \nSpeakers: \nLynn Riley\, a Washington State native\, has been growing vegetables most of her adult life\, first in pea patches around Seattle and later at her home in Snohomish County. A Master Gardener since 2015\, she enjoys growing food for family and friends and sharing her knowledge about vegetable gardening. Lynn currently serves as coordinator for the Kitchen Garden at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at Jennings Park in Marysville. SUMMARY:Sustainable Community Stewards Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Community Stewards Fall 2025 Training\n  \nBecome a WSU Snohomish County Extension Sustainable Community Steward and learn what can and can’t be recycled\, how to reduce waste\, and why individual and community-level actions make a difference towards climate change. Become more engaged in your local community by enrolling in this fall’s training sessions. \nThose who sign up will receive university-level training grounded in climate change science relevant both within Snohomish County and globally. The training shapes participants into informed community educators and prepares them for a volunteer commitment of at least 10 hours a year. A combination of engaging classroom presentations and discussions paired with behind-the-scenes field trips highlight this educational and community engagement opportunity. \nSchedule\nThe training is every Wednesday evening starting September 10th and ending November 5th\, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. There will be 6 in-person classes will be at the WSU Snohomish County Extension office at Willis Tucker Park\, 6705 Puget Park Dr.\, Snohomish\, and 3 classes will be on Zoom. The training features presentations on environmental justice\, food waste prevention\, and the circular economy as well as home composting and DIY eco-friendly cleaning product demonstrations. Classes will feature speakers from WSU Extension\, Republic Services\, Seattle REconomy\, Zero Waste Washington\, and more. Further\, the training includes field trips to WM Cascade Recycling Facility\, the Brightwater treatment plant\, Cedar Grove Compost\, Snohomish County transfer station\, and an organic farm. \nThe course costs $60\, with accommodations and fee-waivers available upon request. I am so much more aware of my impacts now. I think each day about what changes I can make and have made since I started the training. Great perspective\, and new friends. Looking forward to the volunteer opportunities.” \nEach person gets to select which projects they work on\, with options like Styrofoam recycling events\, Repair Cafés\, Green Cleaning workshops\, the sustainability newsletter\, waste-sorting at events and more. We do not require any other training.

DESCRIPTION:Got broken stuff? Toss it? No way! Bring it to a WSU Repair Café!\n\nYou can bring your vacuums\, lamps\, computers (software issues only)\, bikes\, jewelry\, and one of our volunteer fixers will diagnose the issue and do their best to make it usable again. They will show you their process\, order parts if necessary\, and help you learn how to do it yourself with one-on-one instruction. Our fixers can repair your items and keep stuff from going to the landfill!\n\nPlease note:\n\nWe cannot fund the cost of any additional parts needed. If your item needs a part for repair\, our volunteer will contact you to discuss this with you.\nWe don’t guarantee repairs\, and we are not responsible for any damages from attempting to repair an item. So\, you must sign a liability release form before seeing a repair specialist.\nAt these free repair events\, we may decline to work on any item – in advance or at the event – depending on the item\, the type of repair needed\, the fixers available\, or for other reasons. We cannot work on cell phones or Apple products.\nTwo item maximum per meeting. SUMMARY:Preserve the Harvest 6: Basics of Pressure Canning
DESCRIPTION:[section ][row layout=”side-right” padding=”pad-bottom”][column ][textblock ] \nOnline via Zoom and In-person  \nIn the sixth and final class in the Preserve the Harvest series\, we will cover the basics of Pressure canning.  Pressure canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods\, such as vegetables and meats. You will learn the science behind pressure canning recommendations\, as well as the basics of using a pressure canner at home based on current USDA canning guidelines.  In addition\, there will be plenty of time for your canning questions after the presentation. \nA list of recommended resources will be provided via email the next day to those registered along with a link to a video recording of the class. SUMMARY:Upcycled Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create beautiful collage art using recycled paper you can find around the house!\n  \nJoin volunteers from WSU Snohomish County Extension Sustainable Community Stewards for a free workshop on Tuesday\, August 12th from 1pm to 3pm at the Mountlake Terrace Library. Participants will create upcycled art and learn how to reduce waste in Snohomish County. The workshop will be held in the meeting room at Mountlake Terrace Library. We encourage participants to bring old magazines\, newspapers\, and other paper materials from home for collaging. We will provide all other collage supplies. \nThe workshop will begin with a short presentation on reducing your impact on the Earth. DESCRIPTION:Do you have Styrofoam occupying your home? Filling up garages\, corners\, and closets? Then bring your (clean) Styrofoam to our FREE collection event on Saturday\, August 2nd from 10am to 12pm (2-hour collection window) to the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park!\n\nVolunteers from the Snohomish County WSU Sustainable Community Stewards will be waiting in the parking lot near the Northwest Stream Center at 600 128th St. SE\, Everett\, WA to collect your materials\, which will then be transported to Styro Recycle in Kent.\n\nCollection will take place from 10am to 12pm.
