SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Growing on a small scale - in raised beds and containers
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to grow food in small spaces. One of the best ways to maximize a small gardening area is to use containers\, pots and raised beds. These options offer flexibility and control over the growing environment\, making them perfect for beginners or those with limited space. Topics covered include size\, materials\, suitable crops\, drainage\, watering and harvest. \nSpeaker:\nRosy Smit was raised on a dairy farm in Canada and has been involved in growing food and agriculture since a young age.  With an undergraduate degree in Agro-Ecology and a M.Sc. in Soil Science\, she has grown vegetables\, flowers and herbs\, fruit and berries and assorted livestock on commercial and backyard scales and taught food system educational topics to all ages.  She still thinks seed germination is magical and is excited to help more people learn how to grow their own food. \nGrowing Groceries\nIn partnership with WSU Snohomish County Master Gardeners\, the Growing Groceries program brings beginning and experienced gardeners together with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices. \nNo matter if you have a tiny apartment deck\, small garden space\, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh\, healthy food in a healthier\, more environmentally friendly way. \nDeveloped over the last decade\, our program goal is to increase community access to fresh\, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food. \nWSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of noncompliance may be reported through your local extension office. Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities and special needs; contact WSU Extension at 425-338-2400 at least two weeks prior to the event. \nWhere\nOnline via Zoom \nCost\nTake just the classes you want at $10 per class or take all 4 classes for $35! \nRegistration\nRegistration is now open for the Winter 2026 Growing Groceries Education series. Visit GrowingGroceriesWinter2026.eventbrite.com to register. \nOther classes in the series… \n

SUMMARY:Growing Groceries: Starting a Vegetable Garden
DESCRIPTION:Includes a discussion on site selection\, raised beds\, planning your crop calendar\, plant families\, inter-cropping\, succession planting\, and crop rotation. We’ll also talk about raising vegetables in containers including container types\, soil\, drainage\, fertilizer\, irrigation\, and strategies for maximizing your harvest. \nSpeakers:\nDiane Decker-Ihle has been a Snohomish County Master Gardener since 1990 and an avid gardener most of her life. She helped establish the WSU Extension Snohomish County Growing Groceries Program in 2009 and has been teaching Growing Groceries classes ever since.  She has been an advisor for several community gardens and managed her church’s food bank garden for many years. With B.S. degrees in biology and medical technology\, Diane enjoys learning the science behind the sustainable gardening techniques she teaches. \nLynn Riley\, a Washington State native\, has been growing vegetables most of her adult life\, first in pea patches around Seattle and later at her home in Snohomish County.
