4-H Youth Advocates for Health (YA4-H!) is recruiting teen interns across Spokane County to become involved in an exciting internship opportunity. YA4-H! is a WSU/4-H leadership program that empowers teens to make a difference in their community by exploring and working to address local health issues. The YA4-H! has three topics of concern that the teens will focus on: 1) food and nutrition, 2) exercise-movement, and 3) mental wellness. Teen interns will work within the YA4-H! club, teaming with WSU faculty, staff, and 4-H volunteers to learn about these important issues, brainstorm local solutions, and then take action by completing a teen-led community project. Teen interns will receive training in a career-building curriculum called Teens as Teachers, which will give them the skills necessary in order to work with our youth in area schools. We will be teaching/using curriculum that focuses on nutrition and exercise and/or substance use prevention.

Curriculum We Use:

  • The Choose Health: Food, Fun and Fitness curriculum prepares you with the knowledge to help guide our elementary age youth in Spokane County in making healthier decisions in regard to their fitness, nutrition and mental wellbeing.
  • The Learn, Grow, Eat, Go! curriculum is the new research-based, evidence-based curriculum project of the International Junior Master Gardener® Program. LGEG grows good kids through an interdisciplinary program combining academic achievement, gardening, nutrient-dense food experiences, physical activity, and school & family engagement.
  • The National curriculum, Health Rocks! Inspired to Be Substance Free will provide knowledge regarding healthy and trusting relationships and ideas for saying “No!” to substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

In the beginning we will meet every other week after school via Zoom. In January, we will have a day-long training in the Teens as Teachers and CHFFF curriculum.  We begin teaching in after-school programs February-June. We will divide the team into groups, with each group teaching 1 day a week for winter/spring.
