DESCRIPTION:September 16th\, 5 pm to 8:00pm\n  \n@Violet Prairie Seed Farm: 17843 Gibson Rd.\, Tenino WA 98589 \nField Day Topics\n\nOverview of Seed Farm production\nThe sustainability of grazing rangeland and prairie habitat\nAll you need to know about native seed: seed mixes\, sowing methods\, sowing timing\, site prep.\, post-seeding mgmt.\nEasement and incentive programs\nTour of seed farm and Fisher Ranch\n\nFarmers\, ranchers\, and interested citizens are invited to a pasture management and native seeding field day on September 16th at Violet Prairie Seed Farm and Fisher Ranch in Tenino\, WA. This field day will focus on grazing management for forage productivity and habitat\, and native seeding in grazed pastures\, and incentive programs that support actions to enhance native habitat. \nAttendees will learn about the sustainability of rangeland and rotational grazing systems from Washington State University (WSU) Extension\, the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)\, the Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM)\, WSU Conservation Biology Lab\, and the Thurston Conservation District (TCD). Attendees will also learn about appropriate native seed mixes\, sowing rates and methods and opportunities to enhance the ecological value of working lands by seeding native species in pastures\, and rotational grazing. \nThis field day is co-hosted by the WSU\, CNLM\, NRCS\, and TCD\, and will be held at Violet Prairie Seed Farm (17843 Gibson Rd.\, Tenino\, WA 98589)\, with a visit to neighboring Fisher Ranch\, on July 16th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. \nGrazing lands can make meaningful contributions to habitat and species conservation\, while providing viable business opportunities for farmers and ranchers in south Puget Sound and southwest Washington. We’ll talk about opportunities to recognize these twin contributions of working lands\, and ways to sustain viable farms and ranches while improving habitat value at the same time. \nDinner will be served\, and registration is free. SUMMARY:Learn How to Can at Home - Basics of Safe Canning
DESCRIPTION:Summertime means lots of fresh\, sweet fruit and crisp\, delicious veggies. Preserve your summer bounty for a well-stocked pantry through the dark\, winter months. Join us in discussions on how to preserve fresh food safely\, in a series of classes at WSU Extension Thurston County\, 5033 Harrison Ave NW\, Olympia. \nBasics of Safe Canning – July 26th\, 6-8pm  \nLearn the basics of food safety and canning skills\, including bacteria and food spoilage\, canning equipment\, and canning high/low acid foods. Includes demonstration only. \nJams\, Jellies and Spreads – August 2nd\, 6-8pm \nDelight in the bright\, fresh flavors of summer fruits and discover how easy it is to capture sunshine in a jar. Learn how to create that perfect balance of sugar\, fruit and other ingredients to enhance flavor and shelf-life with research-based recipes. Low and no sugar recipes covered. Come prepared to cook during this hands-on session\, and take home a jar of fresh-made jam! \nPickling and Fermenting – August 23rd\, 6-8pm \nCrisp\, tasty pickles are a true test of a canner’s skill. Learn how to make your perfect pickle! In addition\, we will look at the traditional art of fermentation\, with a hands-on sauerkraut-making session. Come prepared to cook and take home a jar of freshly-made sauerkraut! \nClass size is limited and pre-registration is required for the three in-person workshops. Cost is $25 per workshop or take all three for $60 and save $15! She’s been in-love with canning ever since. After many preservation fails\, she began her quest to learn the best and safest methods for home canning.
